When a yeast infection strikes, not all available treatment options are created equal. A 2016 Danish study looked into the possible risk of miscarriage when taking fluconazole to treat yeast infections during pregnancy and, while the FDA is still reviewing that study, it advises caution in using fluconazole and recommends considering alternative treatment options during pregnancy.

In nonpregnant women who have a normal immune system, yeast infections rarely lead to serious complications.
Even in pregnancy, yeast infections dont usually cause harmful effects in the mother. However, you can pass the yeast to your baby during delivery.
Most babies who develop a yeast infection have it just in their mouths or diaper area. However, though rare, a yeast infection in babies can become very serious, because their immune systems arent yet well-developed. It can spread through the infants body and affect breathing and heart rhythm, for example. This happens most often in babies who have other things affecting their immune systems, such as prematurity or an underlying infection.
Yeast infections can also cause body-wide infections and serious complications in women who have a weakened immune system because of conditions such as HIV.

How To Prevent A Yeast Infection During Pregnancy
Theres no guaranteed method of prevention, but whether youre pregnant or not, here are some ways to decrease your chances of getting a yeast infection. In general, you want to try to let the vaginal area breathe and minimize the amount of moisture down there, says Phillips.
Edit your underwear drawer. Make sure to choose underwear and tights with cotton crotches, and avoid wearing thongs or anything thats too tight. You should also remove underwear before going to bed.
Change out of damp stuff pronto. Dont wear wet swimsuits or gym clothes for longer than needed, and wash them each time you wear them.
With bottoms, go for a flowy look. If youre opting for pants, keep them loose-fitting and breathable.
Stock up on probiotic foods. For example, eating yogurt containing live Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures may help keep your vaginal pH in check.
Skip scented products. Dont take baths with scented products and avoid douching, vaginal sprays and sanitary pads with fragrance.
