- medicines for HIV, epilepsy and tuberculosis
- complementary remedies, such as St John’s Wort
- some antibiotics, such as rifabutin or rifampicin
If you’re taking any of these medicines, you’ll need additional contraception , or you may wish to use a different method of contraception that isn’t affected by your medicine.
Always tell your doctor that you’re using an implant if you’re prescribed any medicine. You can also ask them whether the medicine you’re taking will affect the implant.
When To See A Doctor
Women should speak to a doctor as soon as possible if they suspect that they are pregnant or have had a positive result on a pregnancy test while on birth control.

If you get Nexplanon during the first 5 days of your period, youre protected from pregnancy right away.
If you get the implant at any other time in your cycle, use some other form of birth control during the first week. After that first week, the implant starts working and youre protected from pregnancy for up to 5 years. Thats why its called get-it-and-forget-it birth control.

How Is Nexplanon Inserted
The insertion process for Nexplanon is very simple, straightforward, and relatively painless. It is considered a minor procedure, but your healthcare provider can do it in their office, and it only requires a local anesthetic.
After thoroughly cleaning the area with an antiseptic, your provider will numb the area of your upper arm where she will insert the implant. What Is The Nexplanon Implant
Nexplanon is a small, thin, flexible, and matchstick-sized plastic implant device that is placed underneath the skin of your inner upper arm. If you are right-handed, doctors place it in the left arm and vice versa. It is considered a long-acting birth control option for women, to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years and must be removed after 3 years.
The implant continuously releases a hormone, progestin , that stops an egg from being released from your ovary, prevents sperms from reaching the egg, and changes the linings of your womb. It also contains a small amount of barium sulfate for its better visibility under X-ray.

Nexplanon prevents pregnancy by continually releasing a low dose of progestin over a three-year period. The amount of progestin released slowly decreases over time.
