Get Help To Stop Smoking
Smoking affects fertility in men and women. If you stop smoking now it will improve your chances of conceiving. Smoking has also been shown to damage the DNA of your baby. During pregnancy smoking is the biggest risk factor for serious complications in pregnancy that you can change.
How Long It Takes To Get Pregnant
This is a slightly different question but one that many people wonder about. If you do get pregnant in a given month, how long after you had sex did it happen?
First, keep in mind that fertilization of the egg isn’t pregnancy. Any couple that has gone through IVF treatment and had an embryo transfer that “didn’t stick” can tell you this. For pregnancy to happen, an embryo needs to implant itself into the endometrial lining.
Second, sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days. This means if you have sex at 10 p.m. on Monday, but ovulation doesn’t occur until 7 a.m. on Thursday, fertilization of the egg can still occur, though is less likely.
However, if you had sex on Friday, and Friday is the day you ovulate, fertilization may happen for up to 12 hours. After 12 hours, it is unlikely that the ovum will be fertilized. Regardless of when fertilization takes place, the uterus is primed for embryo implantation between 7 and 10 days after ovulation.
Taking into account how long sperm survive and the time it takes for fertilization and implantation, you can be pregnant as soon as seven days after you had sex or as long as 15 days.
Sometimes, women will wonder if they already are having pregnancy symptoms the day after they have unprotected sexual intercourse. They may “feel pregnant,” but those feelings are not related to any possible fertilization or pregnancy. You won’t have actual pregnancy signs or symptoms until after implantation occurs.

Other Tips For Getting Pregnant
Changing your sex practices isnt the only way to improve your likelihood of conceiving. Here are a few other things you can do to boost your fertility:
- Orgasm. For a man, ejaculating is essential to getting his partner pregnant. Though a woman doesnt have to climax to get pregnant, the movement of her orgasm can help propel sperm closer to their destination.
- Control your weight. Being too heavy or too thin could lower your fertility.
- Dont smoke. Smoking increases the odds of infertility and miscarriage, and reduces sperm motility.
- Limit caffeine. In large amounts more than five cups of coffee a day caffeine can lower fertility.

Use A Fertility Monitor
If you have been trying to conceive for over 6 months, consider investing in a fertility monitor. I like the Ovacue Fertility Monitor because it measure the electrolytes in your saliva that correlates with the hormonal changes that occur in your cycle just prior to ovulation and it is very accurate.
The Ovacue fertility monitor is very popular because it’s easy to use. In my opinion, using Ovacue doubles, will double your chances of conception each month.
This monitor is the only one that can tell you 5-7 days in advance when your are about to conceive. Ovacue is recommended for all women who are trying to conceive with low ovarian reserve to help increase the chances of conception.
Stop Taking Birth Control
It may seem obvious, but if you want to get pregnant fast, youll need to quit your method of birth control. Depending on what form youre using, fertility doesnt necessarily return right away. With barrier methods, like condoms, upping your chance of getting pregnant is as easy as leaving them in your nightstand drawer. If you have a non-hormonal IUD removed, your body will immediately be ready for pregnancy. But for women who have been using hormonal forms of birth control, it can sometimes take a few weeks for your body to regulate and ovulate.
Especially when women have been on birth control for a very long time, cycles may not occur right away. They may be absent or very irregular for a month or so, says Eric D. Levens, MD, medical director at Shady Grove Fertility Clinic. Typically with the pill, after about six to eight weeks, you should start seeing your cycle. If after 8 to 10 weeks youre still not getting a period, its wise to seek help from a doctor to figure out whats going on.

Improving Your Chances Of Becoming Pregnant
Youll have a better chance of getting pregnant if you understand your menstrual cycle. The average cycle is 28 days, but it can vary from anywhere between 20 to 40 days for some women.
If your cycle is regular, then you can know that you probably ovulate 2 weeks before the start of your next cycle. So you can work from that and work out the best time to have sex.
Also, both you and your partner should be as healthy as you can be. Apart from anything else, this really will help your chances of getting pregnant. You can both:
- quit if you smoke, and avoid passive smoking
- be a healthy weight
- check for and treat any sexually transmitted infections
Consider Going Off Birth Control Ahead Of Time
Its possible to get pregnant as soon as you stop your birth control method. There is no medical reason that you need to take a break from hormones before trying to conceive.
But if youre using a hormonal method of birth control, it may be worth going off it ahead of time and using an alternate form of protection until youre ready to start trying. The reason is that when you are using hormonal birth control, you dont have a true menstrual cycle. With some forms of hormonal contraception, you still bleed, and with others, you do not. But even if you bleed, its not a real period. The synthetic hormones suppress your natural cycle.
Note that with progestin-only forms of hormonal birth control, such as the Mirena IUD and the mini-pill, you may still ovulate even if youre not getting your period. But if youre taking a combined oral birth control pill, or have a Nuvaring or Nexplanon, then you are likely not ovulating.
Since its so important to learn to track your natural cycle in order to increase your chances of conceiving quickly, going off contraception early can give you some time to reacquaint yourself with your cycle and learn how to track it. Theres a bit of a learning curve with most methods, so you may appreciate some time to practice before you feel the pressure to conceive.

Start Taking Folate Supplements
Also known as vitamin B9, folic acid is incredibly important if you are trying to conceive. Folic acid supports the neural tube formation of your baby, ensuring proper brain development.
Doctors recommend taking at least 400 micrograms of folic acid a day leading up to conception and for the following 12 weeks after conception.
Why should you start taking folic acid before youre pregnant? The neural tube begins to develop quite soon after conception and is usually complete just four weeks into your pregnancy. Therefore, it might start to develop before you know youre pregnant.
Start taking a prenatal vitamin with folate as soon as you start trying for a baby. You can also get folate from eating beans, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains like brown rice.

Being physically active most days of the week can help a woman’s body prepare for the demands of pregnancy and labor, and has been associated with a reduced risk of fertility problems, scientists reported in the March 2020 issue of the journalHuman Reproduction. But getting too much exercise or doing frequent strenuous workouts could interfere with ovulation,Live Science reported.
Doctors see a lot of menstrual disturbances in women who exercise heavily, and a lot of times these women need to cut back on their workouts if they want to become pregnant, Pavone told Live Science.

Start Taking Folic Acid Now
Folic acid needs to build up in your body to provide maximum protection for your baby against neural tube defects. Many women conceive within one month of trying so it is ideal to start taking folic acid two months before you stop contraception. If you have already stopped contraception, start taking a 400mcg folic acid supplement daily until you are 12 weeks pregnant.
Some women may be prescribed 5mg of folic acid.
When Is The Best Time To Conceive
The best time to get pregnant is during the ovulation period, a period when a mature egg is released from the ovary. While sperm is able to survive for 48 to 72 hours after sex, the mature egg can only live for 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. This means that the female egg can only get fertilized 12-24 hours after it is released. Hence, to increase your chances of conception, it is best to have sex around 2-3 days before ovulation. This ensures that there is a healthy supply of sperm in the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg when it is finally released.
Predicting when your ovulation will happen can help immensely in conceiving your baby.
In the average 28-day menstruation cycle for any woman, ovulation happens only once and is generally around 14 days prior to the start of the next cycle. However, women with a 28-day menstruation cycle are in the minority, as most women have a menstruation cycle lasting between 24 and 35 days. As ovulation occurs 14 days before the last day of the cycle, or the day when you get your periods, it means that it could happen on day 10 for a woman with a 24-day menstruation cycle or on day 21 for a woman with a 35-day menstruation cycle.
Women with regular menstrual cycles can make use of devices such as the ovulation calculator to predict your ovulation time each month. Additionally, ovulation prediction kits that test your hormone levels throughout your menstruation period, will be able to determine which day you are likely to ovulate.
