When To Take A Pregnancy Test
Some early pregnancy tests can be taken five days before the expected day of your next period. However, even the most sensitive early test may give a false negative. Although there is some hCG in the urine, there is not enough for the test to pick up.
Think of it like this:
Imagine your urine is an Olympic size swimming pool full of water. Someone puts a few drops of food coloring in the pool, but you cant see it because your eyes are not sensitive enough to pick up on such a tiny amount.
Now imagine someone dumps 2,000 gallons of food coloring into the pool. Now there is enough color in the pool for you to see.
Pregnancy tests work the same way. If a home pregnancy test detects hCG in the urine, it will display positive if not, it will display negative. But there needs to be a high enough hCG level in your urine for the test to see it.
This is also why its best to take a test first thing in the morning. This is when the concentration of hCG in your urine is highest.
An early pregnancy test has to be performed with the first urine of the day. Its best to perform a test on the day of your missed period with your first pee, and this becomes less important until six weeks after your last period when you can detect hCG in urine at any time of day.

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human Chorionic Gonadotropin , which can be detected in urine or blood after an embryo implants itself into your uterine wall, Dr. Kenosha told The New York Post. hCG is the first detectable sign of pregnancy, and home tests are an easy and reliable way to determine if youre pregnant.
How Soon Can I Take A Pregnancy Test After A 5 Day Ivf Transfer
The earliest you can check a pregnancy test after a blastocyst transfer is 9-10 days.
Beta human chorionic gonadotropin , the hormone that indicates that the fertilized egg has implanted into the uterine wall, rises at around 7 8 days after implantation.
With that said, I recommend that you dont check a urine home pregnancy test. Instead, it would be best if you have your doctor perform a blood pregnancy test.

Why You Should Trust Us
For this guide, we interviewed Dr. Brindha Bavan, an obstetrician-gynecologist, reproductive endocrinologist, and fertility specialist at Stanford Medicine Dina Greene, PhD, a clinical associate professor of chemistry at the University of Washington who has co-authored several published studies on hCG testing in clinical settings and David Grenache, PhD, chief scientific officer at a diagnostic testing company and a clinical professor of pathology at the University of New Mexico who has studied hCG for more than 15 years.
I am a science writer with a PhD in microbiology and immunology. I spent seven years in the lab performing and also designing antibody-based assays that use the same chemical principles as at-home hCG tests. Ive also experienced two pregnanciesone after a year of trying and one that was a complete surprise. So Ive squinted at my share of faint lines, and I know what it feels like to wait alone in the bathroom for a result that has the potential to change your life.
When Is It Too Early To Take A Pregnancy Test
Taking a pregnancy test sooner than eight days past your ovulation might result in a false negative. This is because fertilized eggs dont start producing the pregnancy hormone that tests detect hCG until after implantation is complete.
About 85 percent of the time, implantation occurs 610 days after ovulation. After implantation, your hCG levels will start doubling every 48 hours. At this point, pregnancy tests will be able to measure your hCG levels, ensuring a positive result if youre pregnant.

How Accurate Are Pregnancy Test Results
At-home pregnancy tests are accurate if you use them correctly. In general, most urine pregnancy tests claim to be 99 percent accurate after a missed period. This depends on how and when you use them.
For example, expired tests may not produce accurate results. You can get optimal accuracy by taking a test after you miss a period and collecting a urine sample in the morning, according to the OWH. Thats because the amount of hCG in your blood increases with time. And finally, some home pregnancy test brands are more sensitive than others.
What If The Pregnancy Test Is Negative After Ivf
If you have a negative pregnancy test at least 9-10 days after a blast transfer, the transfer was unsuccessful.
Unfortunately, a high-quality euploid embryo does not implant ~40% of the time. There is no way to predict who will and wont be able to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
Your doctor will let you know if there are any other fertility treatments they recommend before trying again.

How Home Pregnancy Tests Work
So how do the tests actually detect hCG? Most of the action takes place along a narrow strip of a special absorbent type of paper. Each strip is pre-loaded with molecules needed to detect hCG and create a colored band and a control band. As urine containing hCG gets wicked up the paper, it passes areas where those molecules have been deposited.
Each tests design is slightly different, but it generally goes like this: In the first area of the paper the urine hits, dyed antibodies cling to the beta region of hCG, and together, the two molecules flow forward to a second area, where antibodies that cling to hCGs alpha region are stuck to the paper. These capture the hCG and the dyed antibody, and as the dyed antibodies accumulate, they create a visible line. In the meantime, extra dyed antibody that has not stuck onto any hCG flows on to the control zone, where it gets trapped by a third antibody. It accumulates and creates a visible control line, letting the tester know they used enough urine to make the test work.
In wand tests, all of this happens inside a plastic casing with a handle, and the test zone and control zone are usually under a clear layer of plastic. The urine is picked up by an absorbent material at one end of the wand, either by the tester peeing directly on it or dipping it into a cup of urine. The absorbent tip carries the urine to the paper strip inside the wand.
How Do I Read Pregnancy Test Results
Always read the instruction insert that comes with the pregnancy tests youve purchased. With a line test, there will be a test line and a control line. The control line shows up to confirm the test is working. The test line only shows up when hCG is detected. Sometimes, these two lines are shown as two parallel lines. Other times, they may be two crossed lines.
And remember: Home pregnancy tests are qualitative. That means if the test line comes up at all even if its relatively faint you are currently pregnant.
Digital tests are somewhat easier to read in the sense that theyll display the words Pregnant or Not pregnant, making interpretation simple.

Where Can I Get A Pregnancy Test
You can buy a pregnancy test at your local pharmacy, drugstore, grocery store, and some convenience or dollar stores. Pregnancy tests are usually inexpensive they can cost as little as a dollar. Sometimes you can get a free pregnancy test at certain health centers.
You can also get a pregnancy test from your nurse or doctor, community clinic, or local Planned Parenthood Health Center. Most health centers use the same urine pregnancy tests that you can buy in stores. Sometimes they use a blood test to test for pregnancy, but thats usually only under special circumstances.
But be careful when looking for a reliable health center, because there are fake clinics out there called Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Crisis Pregnancy Centers give free pregnancy tests and claim to offer information and help. But theyre run by people who may not be medical professionals, and dont believe in giving you honest facts about pregnancy and all of your options. Crisis pregnancy centers are often located very close to Planned Parenthood health centers or other real medical centers, and have similar names they do this to confuse people and trick them into visiting their center instead.
Your nearest Planned Parenthood health center can help you find a safe place to get a pregnancy test in your area.
Baking Soda Gender Test
If you already know youre pregnant but just cant wait to find out the gender, you can use another common household kitchen item baking soda to see what youre having. This is an old wives tale, but it might be fun to do!
- Add two tablespoons of baking soda to a clean bowl.
- Urinate in a separate clean cup.
- Add your urine to the bowl with the baking soda.
If it fizzles like beer or soda, youre probably having a boy. If there is little to no reaction, you are probably having a girl.

How Do Homemade Pregnancy Tests Work
Homemade pregnancy tests work the same way as any over-the-counter pregnancy test by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin . If you test positive, you may observe a chemical reaction between hCG in your urine and the substance you are using to test.
Your cells start to produce the hCG hormone when they start creating the placenta. This hormone increases rapidly early in pregnancy and enters your bloodstream and urine, confirming conception .
How Soon Can You Take A Pregnancy Test
Taking a pregnancy test too soon is a thing, though, it varies based on a tests sensitivity rate so be sure to read the directions thoroughly, explained Dr. Kenosha.
You can use most pregnancy tests starting five days before you expect your period to start, she continued. If you get a negative result and are testing more than three days before your expected period, you could still be pregnant and should take another test in a few days.
The reason for this is that you could be early in your pregnancy, meaning you may not have enough hCG for the test to detect yet, Dr. Kenosha told The Post. Though, in just two days, your hCG levels will usually double, meaning the more likely it is to get a positive result.

How We Chose The Best Home Pregnancy Tests
For this list, we polled several physicians and midwives to get their expert opinions, read research studies, asked some parents, and even peed on a few sticks ourselves. We particularly focused on accuracy.
While many brands claim 99 percent accuracy, that depends on when you test. A large, third-party study shows that for some mainstream tests, it can be lower depending on when you test in relation to a missed period. The most accurate time to test is starting on the day of your missed period and the week after.
While the above study was conducted in 2011, its the most recent research to compare mainstream tests. Its important to consider that some brands may have changed their technology since.
What To Do After You Test Positive For Pregnancy
First: Congratulations! Second, double-check. Many pregnancy tests come by 3, so you can confirm the result. Remember that there have been cases where the test came out negative, but there was a pregnancy. If you want to be sure, make an appointment with your doctor.
Then you can tell your loved ones, many women prefer to tell them at the end of the third month when the high risk of losing the baby is ending and after having the appointment with their doctor.
You can choose between an ob-gyn or a midwife to carry your pregnancy and once you decide what type of professional will guide you, you can find the right one for you -some websites can help you with that like yelp.com or zocdoc.com- Start thinking about what the baby will need and about changing your diet to a healthier one. Sounds like a lot? Dont worry. You have nine months ahead Youll be fine.

How To Choose The Best Pregnancy Test Kit
Before you purchase a pregnancy test that will dictate such a special moment in your life then you will need to consider a few different things before you make your final purchases. The first thing to do is select a test that allows you to use it without providing difficult instructions.
Next, decide whether you want a test that has digital or lines to present your reading. Sometimes depending on how much hCG is in your bloodstream the lines on the test could come through faintly and not give you the strongest reading. Once you are pregnant, you should use some nursing bras.
The price of a pregnancy test depends on the brand and how many test sticks you choose to select when making your purchase. If you need multiple results then a 3-pack Test is best for you if not a 1 or 2-pack may be the better option. Considering these criteria can make this special moment much smoother.

Blood Test Result Timetable
Blood tests are able to detect a smaller amount of hCG and they can detect it slightly earlier than standard at-home pregnancy tests, usually nine to 12 days after conception. Blood test results are usually available the same day or within a day.
Blood tests aren’t often done to detect pregnancy because they are expensive and at-home urine tests are quite accurate and sensitive. However, people who are undergoing fertility treatments may have blood tests as part of their care.
What Should Hcg Levels Be 1214 Or 16 Days After The Transfer
12-16 days after a blastocyst transfer, you would be approximately 4-5 weeks gestation, which can correspond to a beta hCG level as low as 50 or as high as 1,000+ mIU/mL.
Twin gestations will have higher levels than a singleton gestation at the same gestational age.
Given that there is a wide range of levels that your b hCG level can be in early pregnancy, it is best to look at the trend rather than the absolute number.
With that said, levels in the lower end of this range might indicate a problem with embryo implantation.
