Things To Think About
In the early days and weeks of pregnancy, you may not know if you’re pregnant.
But you can do the following things:
- take a folic acid supplement of 400 micrograms a day while you’re trying to get pregnant and until the 12th week of pregnancy
- take a vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms a day
- avoid some foods to protect against infections
- stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your baby’s health
You can get supplements from pharmacies and supermarkets, or your GP may be able to prescribe them for you.
If you want to get your vitamin D or folic acid from a multivitamin tablet, make sure the tablet does not contain vitamin A .
You can get vitamin supplements containing folic acid and vitamin D free of charge if you’re under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding and qualify for the Healthy Start scheme.
How Big Is Baby
Your due date will be calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period. Conception occurs about two weeks from this day, and that’s when you’re truly considered pregnant. In just 40 short weeks, your baby will grow from the size of a tiny seed to the size of a plump watermelon.

Does A Pregnancy Test Appear Positive At 2 Weeks
Typically, at-home tests will not start to register a pregnancy until at least week 4 or after a woman misses her first period.
Pregnancy tests help determine if a woman is pregnant by measuring the presence of certain hormones. The levels of these hormones take some time to increase enough to show up on a test. In most cases, this will not occur in week 2.
It is best to wait a few days after a missed period or until a woman has a positive at-home pregnancy test before seeing a doctor to confirm the results. Typically, the first scheduled appointment is 8 weeks after a womans last period.
Pregnancy tests are available to buy in drugstores, pharmacies, and online.

When Should I Call My Doctor About A New Pregnancy
If youve missed your period and gotten a positive pregnancy test, your next step will be to call your healthcare provider for your first appointment. While scheduling, your provider may ask if you have already started taking a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid. Prenatal vitamins are important in early pregnancy because they help in the development of your babys neural tube. The neural tube will become your babys brain and spine. Many healthcare providers recommend that anyone who could become pregnant take folic acid at all times.
If youre planning a pregnancy, a preconception appointment with your healthcare provider is a good place to start. A preconception appointment is especially important if you take medication for a chronic illness or have other medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or lupus.
During this appointment, your provider will discuss any current medical conditions, as well as your general health before pregnancy. This appointment is meant to get you into the best place for a new pregnancy.

The End Of Some Pregnancy Symptoms
As you near the end of your first trimester, your uterus, now about the size of a large grapefruit, begins to migrate from the bottom of your pelvis to a front-and-center position in your abdomen.
If you’re lucky, this will bring an end to one pesky early pregnancy symptom: the constant urge to urinate.
Also slated to diminish somewhat now that you’re on the cusp of your second trimester are some of those other early pregnancy symptoms: nausea, super tender breasts and nipples, food aversions and fatigue.
Your First Three Weeks Of Pregnancy
Hereâs the thing: Because of the way pregnancy is usually measured, youâre not actually pregnant during the first two weeks or so of your pregnancy. Healthcare providers calculate the length of an average pregnancy as 40 weeks, starting from the first day of your last menstrual periodâthis is known as the LMP dating method. So, when youâre 1 week pregnant, youâve only just started your period. At two weeks pregnant, youâre ovulating. And since ovulation happens about 14 days after the start of your period you canât really become pregnant until week 3 at the earliest. It can be mind-bogglingâwe get it. But, for the sake of calculation, and what you and your healthcare provider will consider as 1 and 2 weeks pregnant, youâre not actually pregnant! But although at 1, 2, or 3 weeks pregnant you may not notice any of those very early signs of pregnancy, there may be a lot happening on the inside.

If you have had in vitro fertilization , the EDD is set by the age of the embryo and the date that the embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Pregnancy Week 2 Fetal Development
Complex hormonal changes are already preparing your body for conception. These hormones include estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone , and luteinizing hormone . They work together to make sure an egg or two, in some cases matures properly and is released for conception.
Youll probably conceive around the end of your second week of pregnancy. The chromosomes in each cell combine immediately after a sperm fertilizes the egg, resulting in your babys genes. Even during the first days of pregnancy, your babys gender and genetic features will already be determined.
In the event of identical twins, one sperm fertilizes one egg, which then divides and gives life to two organisms. This results in genetically identical children of the same sex.
In case of non-identical twins, two sperm fertilize two eggs, and the resulting babies can be of the same or different sex. They resemble each other no more than brothers and sisters born at different times.
Within 24 hours of conception, the fertilized egg or zygote will start dividing into multiple cells and traveling down the fallopian tube.

How Soon Do Pregnancy Symptoms Start
For some people, pregnancy symptoms can begin just a few days after conception. You may experience physical symptoms, or you may just sense that something is different in your body. Other people may not feel any difference in their body until well after seeing a positive pregnancy test.
If you have conceived at 2 weeks pregnant, these are the symptoms that could soon clue you in:
Your Body At Week 3 Of Pregnancy
Its very early days in your pregnancy, so dont expect to feel too different. Remember that at week 3 you may not have missed your period yet and may have little idea that youre pregnant. Even if youve been trying to conceive with your partner, you wont find any physical signs of pregnancy to reveal that youve got a little person growing inside.
If youve been trying for a baby, or even if you havent but think you might be pregnant nonetheless, why not take a pregnancy test to make sure? Nowadays, home testing kits are as accurate as a urine or blood test at the clinic and a lot more convenient. Just be sure to carefully follow all the instructions for doing the test and reading it afterwards. If the result is negative, don’t assume you’re not pregnant you may have just tested too early.

What Happens During Week 5
The embryo is less than 1/5 inch long.
A part of the embryo starts to show cardiac activity. It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it’s not a fully-formed heart it’s the earliest stage of the heart developing.
Buds for arms and legs develop.
The neural tube begins forming. The neural tube will later form the brain, spinal cord, and major nerves.
The bud of a tail develops.
- The umbilical cord begins developing.
Your Baby At Week 3 Of Pregnancy
Youll notice from what weve already mentioned that its very difficult to tell exactly when conception has occurred. You know that an egg will be released from your ovary around 2 weeks before your next period, but theres no way to know the precise time that this happens. On top of this, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few days for your partners sperm to make its way up to your fallopian tube.
The problem of not knowing when conception has taken place is solved by doctors timing pregnancy from the beginning of your last menstrual cycle. Odd though this may seem, it means that your doctor starts the clock on your pregnancy before youve even conceived!

Fetal Position: Head Down Or Breech
At 32 weeks pregnant, you’re likely feeling tapping and squirming instead of your baby’s signature rocking and rolling. That’s because, while comfy, your baby is a bit tight for exercise space right now shes actually back to a curled-up position .
Between 32 and 38 weeks, your baby will also probably settle into the head-down, bottoms-up presentation in your pelvis in preparation for birth. That’s because the fetus’ head fits better at the bottom of your inverted, pear-shaped uterus, plus its easier during childbirth if your baby comes out head first.
Fewer than 5 percent of babies prefer the bottom-down position by full-term so don’t worry if your little bean hasn’t assumed the head-down position yet. There’s still a good chance she’ll flip before birth, even in the tight confines of your uterus.
