When Is It The Best Time To Get Pregnant

Do Irregular Periods Affect Your Conception

Which is the best time to get pregnant after periods? – Dr. Thejaswini

Ideally, women have 12 periods in a year. However, some may have fewer or skipped months. Abrupt weight gain or loss, stress, exercises, thyroid disorder, PCOS , and ovarian dysfunction, can all interrupt your periods.

The more irregular your periods are, the tougher it will be to estimate ovulation. However, you may try to predict to know the best days, or even dates for conceiving:

  • Look for the changes in the fertile mucus . Have sexual intercourse when you are likely to notice two or more days of slippery and stretchy mucus. Alternatively, have regular intercourse throughout your cycle .
  • Ovulation kits may help in detecting the ovulation period. The tests are positive when there is an LH surge , which is the trigger for releasing the egg. LH surge happens 24-48 hours before ovulation. You will be most fertile over the next three days of LH surge. Therefore, you can have sex every day over the next three to four days .
  • Record your menstrual cycle for eight or more months. Take the shortest cycle, and subtract 18 from it , and 11 from the longest cycle . The resulting difference will be your most fertile days to get pregnant.
  • If your menstrual cycles are continuously irregular, you should see your healthcare provider without any delay.

    Having Sex Throughout The Month

While some women feel empowered by tracking ovulation, others just feel anxious and overwhelmed by it all. Whatever method of ovulation tracking you choosechecking your temperature every morning, using ovulation detection strips, checking your saliva for ferning, checking your cervical mucus, or all of the abovepaying close attention to your cycles and ovulation signs can be emotionally exhausting.

If timing sex for ovulation is causing anxiety, you can instead just rely on regularly timed sex. In these cases, experts suggest having sex every week, about every other day. Following this schedule, you’re bound to have sex at least once during your fertile window, even without tracking your cycle.

Aim to have sex at least three to four times a week, throughout your cycle. There is a theory that semen may be helpful to the developing embryo. This means that sex after ovulation, and after you’ve conceived in fact, may help your pregnancy “stick.” Another good reason for more sex.

    When To See A Doctor

Women who track their fertile window with the aim of getting pregnant should see their doctor for preconception planning.

As well as identifying barriers to conceiving, a doctor can advise on the use of folic acid or prenatal supplements to encourage a healthy pregnancy.

Most couples who engage in frequent, unprotected sex will conceive within 12 months.

Women under 35 years of age should see their doctor if they do not conceive after a year of trying. Those over 35 years of age should seek medical advice after 6 months of trying to conceive.

Anyone who has irregular cycles or does not appear to ovulate should also speak to their doctor. There may be an underlying medical cause that is preventing ovulation and conception.

How To Track The Best Time To Get Pregnant

To properly plan your baby-making schedule, you need to know when youre ovulating. Regardless of the length of your cycle, ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before your next period. Physical signs, such as watery vaginal secretions, or pain on one side of your pelvis, can also tip you off that your egg is about to drop. You can easily ballpark when to have sex by looking at the calendar, says Shapiro. And add to that your own body changes to confirm what you already know.

Apps, such as the one my husband was using, are like Google Calendar for your ovaries. Their basic function is to flag when youre expected to ovulate based on information you plug in from past periods. If your cycle is regular, apps are highly accurate. But, if you have irregular periods, the calculations can get more complicated and more likely to result in error.

Shapiro points out that its normal for your cycle to vary in length by up to eight days. This can make narrowing down when to have sex more challenging, which means youll have to spend more time in the bedroom to maximize your chances. Having sex a couple of times around ovulation, 48 hours apart, is probably sufficient, Shapiro says. And if youre not sure when youre ovulating, add an extra day.

Trust yourself, Shapiro says. Youre probably getting the timing right. Dont stress too much over it. And dont forget to have fun.

Indeed, 20% of anovulatory women are amenorrheic, lacking periods this is common, for example, while breastfeeding. A woman with anovulatory cycles may also have signs of polycystic ovary syndrome , a condition in which cysts build up in the ovary. However, a 2018 article published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health discussed that having ostensibly regular menstrual cycles, i.e., with bleeds that seem to happen a consistent number of days apart, does not necessarily mean that a woman is ovulating during those cycles .

If you suspect you may not be ovulating, charting the signs of ovulation with a fertility awareness method may help you in your search for answers. Ovulation is important for good health anovulation can mean that there are imbalances in estrogen and progesterone levels that could increase your risk ofbone loss , earlyheart attack and even breast cancer. There really are so many reasons thatwomen actually need to ovulate and have periods!

    Things To Know About Ovulation

As we mentioned in the paragraph above, theres actually only a small window of opportunity each cycle for making a baby just a few days in fact. The day of ovulation is usually the most likely date for conception but it is possible if you try a few days before ovulation too. Thats because the sperm can live for a few days and wait for the egg to get to the fallopian tubes.

Trying for a baby is a great excuse to have frequent sex. Youre most likely to conceive if you have sex in the days around when the egg is released, but trying every two or three days throughout the month is worth a go. Even if it just takes the pressure off and makes things feel less regimented.

Q: If Im Trying To Conceive When Is The Best Time To Have Sex To Maximize My Chances Of Becoming Pregnant

A: Pregnancy occurs after ovulation, when the egg is released into the body and then fertilized by sperm. What a lot of people dont realize, though, is that once youve ovulated, you have just about a 12 hour period of time to conceive.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

Thats because the lifespan of an egg, once it has ovulated, is only about 24 hours which means that if that egg is not fertilized within the first 12 hours after ovulation, conception is likely not going to happen.

Because of this small post-ovulation window, its important to have sex in advance of ovulation, if you can. Sperm can survive inside your cervix for about 72 hours, so having intercourse in the three day-span before you ovulate will give you higher chances of getting pregnant. That way, by the time the egg is released, theres already sperm inside the cervical reservoirs waiting to fertilize it.

One of the most surefire ways to know when youre going to ovulate is to use over-the-counter ovulation strips, which help you identify when youre about to ovulate and thus, when you should be having sex in order to maximize the likelihood of conception.

Although many textbooks and websites will have you believe that ovulation always occurs on Day 14 of the menstrual cycle, this is NOT the case. In fact its thought that ovulation occurs on Day 14 in only 13.5% of menstrual cycles!

While ovulation certainly occurs around this time for some women, there can be enormous variation. One excellent American study looked at a total of 696 menstrual cycles from a group of 213 women. In this study group, ovulation occurred as early as Day 8 of the menstrual cycle and as late as Day 60! .

How Often To Have Sexual Intercourse

To give yourselves the best chance of success, try to have sex every two to three days. If you are under psychological stress, it can affect your relationship and is likely to reduce your sex drive.

If this means you do not have sex as often as usual, this may also affect you or your partners chances of getting pregnant.

Do Sexual Positions Help You Get Pregnant

Positions will not affect your chances of conception but having an orgasm would help. You might have heard that certain positions, such as missionary, help in conceiving. But, there is no evidence to support such claims.

A woman is most likely to get pregnant when she has intercourse regularly. Also, sex for pleasure and enjoy those moments. Do not make the process too mechanical. You and your partner need to relax and be stress-free.

    Factors To Keep In Mind

There are some aspects that should be taken into consideration. They have to do with your comfort and security during pregnancy. Based on these factors, you can define precisely when is the best time of year for you to get pregnant.

    Factors such as

    • If you are prone to the flu or other similar seasonal illnesses, its best not to plan your childs birth for winter months. You want your body at its best in order for your babys arrival to go as smoothly as possible.
    • If you have high blood pressure or suffer from liquid retention, then its best not to plan the end of your pregnancy for summer. Excessive heat can cause these problems to worsen. Especially if your third trimester coincides with the hottest summer months.
    • Some studies suggest that sperm quality is higher during the winter months. This is logical, since heat is one of the factors that limits male fertility. Therefore, if youre having a hard time getting pregnant, you might want to try during winter.
    • Aparentantly, July is the best month to be born. This is because mothers produce a greater amount of vitamin D. This makes children less prone to allergies.

Without a doubt, the best time to try to become pregnant is ultimately when you and your partner are ready.

When Is The Best Time Of The Day To Have Sex To Get Pregnant

No specific time of the day is associated with a greater chance of pregnancy. Nevertheless, some people wonder if having sex in the early morning will help them conceive faster. The idea that morning sex may facilitate conception is often based on the belief that sperm conditions change throughout the day. Does this match the research? Lets take a look.

Several groups of scientists have investigated how different sperm parameters may change depending on the time of day. Some of them suggest that sperm count might rise in the morning, which means there might be more sperm to fertilize the egg. However, the reported difference is only slight.

Another study found that sperm count and motility may increase in the afternoon. In other words, sperm may be more abundant and mobile, increasing their likelihood of reaching the egg in the evening.

These findings look pretty contradictory, and there is no consensus among doctors. Instead, more important factors may help improve sperm quality rather than the time of day. While the time of the day makes almost no difference in sperm activity, a persons lifestyle, long-term health, medications, and even ejaculation frequency can influence sperm quality.

    Pregnancy And Birth Risks

Because of the changes that happen in eggs and sperm as we age, including damage to genetic material, children of older parents have a slightly higher risk of birth defects and genetic abnormalities. The risk of mental health problems and autism spectrum disorder is marginally higher in children of fathers older than 40 than in those with younger fathers.

It is estimated that the risk of having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality is approximately one in 400 for a woman aged 30 and one in 100 for a woman aged 40.

The risks of miscarriage and complications in pregnancy and childbirth are higher for older women than for younger women.

Older women also have a higher risk of having gestational diabetes, placenta previa, placental abruption, a still birth and a caesarean birth than younger women.

Its important to remember that although the risk of health problems increases with age, most babies are born healthy, whatever their parents age.

    Changes In Body Temperature

When youve just ovulated, your body temperature may increase very slightly, by about half a degree Celsius. If youre using temperature as a means of keeping track of when you are most fertile, you need to use a special thermometer to take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. If you record the readings every day using a graph or a spreadsheet, its possible to learn your pattern over time. The time when you are most fertile is 2 to 3 days before the rise in temperature.
