Do You Still Discharge When Pregnant

White Discharge After Implantation

What Kind of Discharge Do You Have During Pregnancy?

For over 70 to 80 percent of women that get pregnant, discharge after implantation is whitish. That is, it looks white, excessive, non-smelly, not itchy, and a little bit slimy.

When you get pregnant, your hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone, spikes resulting in an increased secretion of cervical mucus.

This change causes women to experience a slightly heavier discharge, and so, its nothing abnormal.

Hence, if you are expecting, this type of discharge just before your period could indicate you are already pregnant.

What Does Early Pregnancy Discharge Look Like

After you become pregnant, you might notice an increase in your usual discharge , thanks to more estrogen in your system and an increase in blood flow.

This normal early pregnancy discharge is thin, milky white and has a mild smell. And, really, you can have it any time during pregnancy. Expect it to increase as the months go on.

Vaginal Hygiene During Pregnancy

Increased cervical discharge is among the normal and temporary changes of pregnancy. You may not do anything particular about it. If it is troubling and irritating you, you may try using unscented panty liners. You may also change your undergarments more often.

Try the following tips to maintain vaginal hygiene and manage increased cervical fluid while pregnant:

  • Keep your vulva and the perineum clean.
  • Use water and mild, unscented soap or an emollient while washing the genitals. Wash gently and do not scrub your genitals.
  • Dont use vaginal deodorants, perfumed bubble baths or scented wipes on the vaginal area.
  • Avoid douching the vagina . This irritates the vaginal lining and upsets the natural balance of bacteria. Normal vaginal discharge is quite acidic and the presence of good bacteria keeps the harmful bacteria away. Altering this natural balance may result in inflammation and infection.
  • Wear cotton undergarments.
  • Wear loose clothing that allows air to pass through.
  • Always dry your genital area after bathing or showering, exercising or swimming.
  • Dont use tampons during pregnancy as they may introduce germs in your vagina.

Your first trimester symptoms may be amplified if youre carrying twins. After all, you have two bundles of joy, so youre more likely to have higher hormone levels. You may even suspect youre pregnant sooner than if you were carrying one baby. You can take a pregnancy test this week to find out, but you wont know the number of babies until your first doctors appointment, which is usually around week 8. Your first appointment might happen sooner if you had fertility treatment.

If youve had fertility treatments for pregnancy, you may also have your human chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone levels confirmed with a blood test. Theres nothing to see on an ultrasound yet, but high hCG and progesterone levels may give you a clue that youre carrying multiples.

How Do I Check My Cervical Mucus

You can check your cervical mucus a few different ways:

  • Use your fingers: With clean hands, place a finger in your vagina. Remove your finger and look at the mucus. You may need to use another finger to see if it stretches.
  • Check your underwear: Look at your underwear when you go the bathroom and note the discharge you see.

Blood Pressure And Exercise

Is It Normal To Have Discharge During Pregnancy? | PeopleTV

There are two types of circulatory changes that may have an impact on exercise during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones can suddenly affect the tone in blood vessels. A sudden loss of tone may result in the feeling of dizziness and perhaps even a brief loss of consciousness. This is because the loss of pressure sends less blood to the brain and central nervous system.

Additionally, vigorous exercise may lead to decreased blood flow to the uterus while diverting blood to muscles. However, this has not been shown to have a long-term impact on the baby. Furthermore, theres to the placenta at rest. This may be beneficial to placental and fetal growth and weight gain.

Why Do I Have Discharge After Ovulation

Although having discharge after ovulation is normal, there are some underlying reasons that you should pay close attention to so as to lead a healthier life.

1. Douching

When you douche, you upset your bacterial balance within the vagina with less good bacteria and more bad bacteria, which can cause discharge. Douching is completely unnecessary and most bad smells come from outside the vagina.

2. Pregnancy

In some cases, an increased amount of discharge after ovulation will indicate pregnancy. Within the beginning few days of pregnancy, mucus starts accumulating by the cervical opening where it will serve as a plug or barrier that protects your baby. It is possible to see extra discharge due to the excess mucus. You will also have higher progesterone levels during pregnancy and this hormonal increase leads to extra lubrication, which in turn leads to increased vaginal discharge.

3. Brown Discharge After Ovulation

Sometimes you will notice brown discharge after your ovulation, which should be perfectly normal. Here are two main reasons of why this happens.

4. Infection

In cases when you have discharge after ovulation that is accompanied by an odd color, foul smell, itchiness or burning, it may be an infection.

5. STD

6. Bacterial Vaginosis

Early Signs You’re Pregnant Before A Missed Period

Early pregnancy symptoms can overlap with common body changes, such as PMS. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Your menstrual cycle is your body’s monthly preparation for pregnancy — if you get pregnant, the lining in your uterus has a job to do and you won’t experience any typical menstrual bleeding. But while a missed period is many people’s first signal that they’re pregnant, it often isn’t the first clue your body gives you.

In the first weeks of pregnancy , the body starts producing a lot of hormones that can affect you physically and mentally. In addition to amping up its regular production of progesterone and estrogen, your body starts producing new ones, including human placental lactogen and human chorionic gonadotropin .

While your body is in hormonal overdrive during early pregnancy, you may feel some side effects. But if hormones are to blame, how do you tell if it’s PMS, ovulation symptoms or something else completely? Below, we outline some signals you might notice from your body during early pregnancy, before you even take a pregnancy test.

How To Use Ovulation Discharge To Determine Your Fertility Window

Taking note of the patterns in your menstrual cycle and when cervical mucus is at its highest and jelly-like can help to determine when you are most likely to conceive.

Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that sperm live in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means that when you notice that your cervical mucus starts to increase and becomes stretchy and whitish or clear, you are approaching ovulation. The greatest chance of becoming pregnant is when the ovulation discharge is abundant and jelly-like.1

Hyperthermia Overheating During Pregnancy

Brown Discharge During Pregnancy

Heat stress during exercise creates concern for two reasons. First, an increase in the mothers core temperature, as in hyperthermia, can be harmful to the babys development. Second, loss of water in the mother, as in dehydration, can decrease the amount of blood available to the fetus. This can lead to increased risk of preterm contractions.

In non-pregnant women, moderate aerobic exercise causes significant increases in core body temperature. Pregnant women, whether they exercise or not, experience a general increase in base metabolic rate and core temperature. Pregnant women regulate their core temperature very efficiently. Increased blood flow to the skin and the expanded skin surface release increased body heat.

Its been shown that pregnant women do not have as much of an increase in body temperature during exercise as those who are not pregnant. However, pregnant women should avoid exercising in non-breathable clothing and in very hot or humid conditions, since the impact of hyperthermia can be severe. The following may help reduce the risk of overheating while exercising:

  • use fans during indoor activity
  • exercise in the pool

What Causes Changes To Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge ebbs and flows throughout a womans menstrual cycle due to a fluctuation in hormone levels. Once you become pregnant, hormones continue to play a role in the changes to your vaginal discharge.

Changes to the cervix during pregnancy also affect vaginal discharge. As the cervix and vaginal wall soften, the body produces excess discharge to help prevent infections. Your babys head may also press against the cervix as you near the end of your pregnancy, which often leads to increased vaginal discharge.

Its important to let your healthcare provider know about any abnormal discharge, as it could be a sign of an infection or a problem with your pregnancy. Here are some signs of abnormal discharge:

  • yellow, green, or gray color
  • strong and foul odor
  • accompanied by redness or itching, or vulvar swelling

Abnormal discharge may be a sign of infection. Yeast infections are common during pregnancy. If you develop a yeast infection during pregnancy, your doctor may recommend a vaginal cream or suppository. To avoid a yeast infection:

  • wear loose, breathable clothing
  • dry your genitals after showering, swimming, or exercising
  • add yogurt and other fermented foods to your diet to promote healthy bacteria

Abnormal discharge can also be caused by a sexually transmitted disease . The

Anytime you notice one of the above symptoms, its important to visit your OB/GYN to get it checked out. Most of the time, changes in vaginal discharge are nothing serious. Even if they do signify an infection, these infections are treatable and shouldnt cause any damage to your health or fertility as long as you treat them promptly.

Pregnancy Discharge: Color And Texture Changes

Stephanie Watson Nivin Todd, MD

All sorts of weird, wonderful, and sometimes surprising changes take place in your body during pregnancy. Your breasts swell, your veins enlarge, your feet lengthen, and your skin takes on that âpregnancy glow.â You might come across another unexpected pregnancy change if you happen to peer into your underwear.

Every woman has discharge, whether sheâs pregnant or not. Discharge is made up of fluid and dead cells. Itâs a natural way for the cells of your vagina and cervix to renew themselves. During the early months of your pregnancy, you might see much more than usual.

âA lot of women really notice it in the beginning part of their pregnancy,â says Susan Hernandez, CNM, MSN, chief nurse-midwife at Massachusetts General Hospital. âItâs what we always get asked about.â

The extra discharge is due to a boost in estrogen production and increased blood flow early in pregnancy, she says. When normal, it should be somewhat thick, clear to white in color, and odorless.

A very strong odor, itching, or burning could be signs of a bacterial or yeast infection, which are more common during pregnancy because of hormonal changes, Hernandez adds. A green or yellow color to the discharge is another sign of infection.

Follow My Babys Growth

Changes in vaginal discharge, especially around the time of a missed period, may be a sign of pregnancy. These changes in vaginal discharge can be caused by increased estrogen. This boost of estrogen also stimulates the blood flow to your pelvic area, which ultimately leads to increased discharge.

If your period is several days late, a pregnancy test can confirm if youre pregnant. Relying solely on cervical discharge is not an accurate way to determine if youre pregnant.

How To Tell The Difference Between Ovulation Discharge And Early Pregnancy Discharge

Abnormal Discharge and Short Cervix

It can be difficult to tell if your discharge is ovulation discharge or early pregnancy discharge. The discharge of early pregnancy just after implantation is also thick and gelatinous with a clear or white color and sticky consistency.

Unlike ovulation discharge, which will start to decrease a few days after ovulation, discharge that is associated with pregnancy will continue to be abundant. According to Dr. Trina Pagano on WebMD, after conception, the growth of cells in the vaginal wall lining causes a thick white discharge. This sticky, jelly-like discharge can continue for the term of pregnancy.4

You can also tell the difference between ovulation discharge and early pregnancy discharge because you might have signs of implantation bleeding that looks like rust-colored spotting. Also, when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, you might experience mild implantation cramping.

How Does Cervical Mucus Help With Conception

Cervical mucus plays a key role in conception. The hormone estrogen peaks just before ovulation. This causes cervical mucus to change from pasty or creamy to resembling stretchy, raw egg whites. This wet, slippery discharge makes it easier for sperm to swim up the vagina and into the uterus to meet an egg. If you have sex at this time, you increase your chances of getting pregnant.

Think of your uterus as a swimming pool, your cervical mucus as water and the sperm as a person trying to swim. If the water was thick or mud-like, there’s no way a person could swim through it to reach the other side of the pool. This is how hard it is for sperm to reach your fallopian tubes if your cervical mucus isn’t fertile. It’s easier for sperm to swim up the uterus to meet an egg for conception in thin, wet, egg white mucus.
