How Do You Calculate When You Get Pregnant

First Day Of Last Period

Getting Pregnant: Everything you need to know (tips from a Fertility Doctor)

Most pregnancies last around 40 weeks , so typically the best way to estimate your due date is to count 40 weeks, or 280 days, from the first day of your last menstrual period . You could also subtract three months from the first day of your last period and add seven days.

The first day of your LMP is how most health care providers estimate a baby’s due date. But remember, it’s only an estimated due date, not a deadline for your baby to arrive. Just 4 percent of babies are born on their estimated due date.

Pregnancy Term & Due Date

Pregnancy is a term used to describe a woman’s state over a time period during which one or more offspring develops inside of a woman. Childbirth usually occurs approximately 38 weeks after conception, or about 40 weeks after the last menstrual period. The World Health Organization defines a normal pregnancy term to last between 37 and 42 weeks. During a person’s first OB-GYN visit, the doctor will usually provide an estimated date at which the child will be born, or due date. Alternatively, the due date can also be estimated based on a person’s last menstrual period.

While the due date can be estimated, the actual length of pregnancy depends on various factors, including age, length of previous pregnancies, and weight of the mother at birth.1 However, there are still more factors affecting natural variation in pregnancy terms that are not well understood. Studies have shown that fewer than 4% of births occur on the exact due date, 60% occur within a week of the due date, and almost 90% occur within two weeks of the due date.2 As such, while it is possible to be fairly confident that a person’s child will be born within about two weeks of the due date, it is currently not possible to predict the exact day of birth with certainty.

  • Calculating the exact day when you will get pregnant is not easy, especially if you have irregular cycles.

    • A woman gets pregnant when a male sperm merges with an egg released before ovulation.
    • Typically, sperm may stay alive in a woman for five days, and fertilization with the ovum may occur if it is released within these days.

The period when a woman is most likely to conceive is called the fertile window, which may help narrow down the conception period.

There are two ways to determine the day of conception, but these do not provide the exact date:

  • Abdominal ultrasound:
  • It may help determine the gestational age .
  • It provides reasonably accurate information regarding the gestational age during the 8th and 18th weeks.
  • Ovulation calculator:
  • It provides you with information about your most fertile period throughout your menstrual cycle.
  • Knowing the fertile window may give you a glimpse of the date of conception. A fertile window is five days before ovulation.
  • Ovulation occurs exactly 14 days before the first day of the present menstrual cyclethe day bleeding starts.
  • If you know the length of your menstrual cycle, then you can calculate the day of ovulation. For example, if your cycles last for 28 days, the day of ovulation is the 14th day after the first day of bleeding of the previous cycle or 14 days before the first day of bleeding of the present cycle.

How Do You Calculate Pregnancy Weeks After Ivf

Calculating weeks of pregnancy and the due date is more precise during an IVF than it is during natural conception. This is because the exact date of embryo transfer is known. The insemination or egg retrieval procedure is scheduled before ovulation in IVF, thus making it more accurate.

The IVF due date is calculated by adding 38 weeks to the day the eggs were inseminated.

An alternative calculation is by adding 38 weeks to the date of transfer and subtract the age of embryos from this date. For instance, if it is a three-day embryo transfer, subtract three days, and if it is a four-day embryo transfer, subtract four days .

It, therefore, gives reliable estimated due dates. Also, with progressing pregnancy, the estimated due date could be more accurate based on ultrasound scans.

What Is Gestational Age Can It Be Different Than What The Calculator Shows

    How Ovulation works

Gestational age is the term used to describe how far along the pregnancy is and how long baby has been gestating .

If you get an ultrasound you may notice a GA on the image with a number of weeks and days. This figure is based on how the baby is measuring, not on your LMP, which the due date calculator uses.

Its normal for these dates to not match up perfectly. If there are significant differences in the dates, your doctor may want to dig deeper to determine conception date. As a result, your midwife or doctor may change your due date based on the ultrasound gestational age.

Early ultrasounds are very accurate when dating a pregnancy and can be helpful if you dont know your LMP or your periods are irregular.

Note that you dont have to have an early ultrasound, especially if you are fairly certain of your cycle length and conception window. This study shows that early dating ultrasounds dont change the incidence of induction.

    A note from Cleveland Clinic

A due date calculator helps you plan for your babys arrival. Keep in mind that a due date calculator is only an estimate. Youll need to see your provider to confirm the date. Your due date may change when you have a prenatal ultrasound. Your provider may even change your due date more than once during your pregnancy, but it usually only changes by a few days. Knowing when to expect your new family member allows you to prepare mentally and physically. An accurate due date also helps your provider monitor your health and the health of your baby.

How To Know When You Conceived

In general, women can only conceive when they are ovulating that is, when their ovaries release a new egg into their fallopian tubes for fertilization. Ovulation usually occurs about two weeks after your menstrual period and lasts for two or three days.

However, not all women have the same cycles of menstruation and ovulation. Some womens menstrual cycles are irregular. Others have ovulation periods closer to or further from their menstrual period. Some women simply arent sure when their last period was. In other words, calculating conception based just on your body cycles can be difficult.

You can also simply try to determine the last time you had sexual intercourse, but this method isnt totally accurate either. Conception is a process and takes time, and a mans sperm can actually stay alive inside your body for up to a week after sex. All of these factors can make it hard to know when exactly you conceived.

This is why a pregnancy confirmation ultrasound is the best way to know how far along your pregnancy is and to determine when you conceived. Pregnancy ultrasounds look directly at the development of your growing baby to determine its age and when you likely conceived. This method is much more accurate than date-based calculation.

    Calculate Using A Dating Ultrasound

A dating ultrasound, which measures the length of the fetus from crown to rump, is an accurate way to estimate your due date or how far along you are if completed within the first trimester . Most women have a pretty good idea of when their last period was, within a day or two, says Scurfield. If a woman has no idea, youll want to try to get her as early as you can. Once you get past 13 weeks, the variability of the growth is such that an ultrasound can be off by a week or so.

How To Calculate Your Pregnancy Weeks With Ivf

To calculate how many weeks pregnant you are for natural conception, you will use the date of your last period, however, for in vitro fertilisation this isnt possible as the insemination has taken place outside of the womans body and the process takes time to be as successful as possible.

Thats why the calculation is slightly different as you will use the date of the embryonic transfer as the moment to start calculating. If you have doubts its better to consult a medical specialist to explain in detail how to do the calculation.

    When Did I Conceive

When exactly did I get pregnant? Many women often ask this question when trying to figure out the exact day their pregnancy began. Often, gestational age, or the age of the baby, is calculated from the first day of the mother’s last menstrual period. However, in reality, the baby was not conceived until ovulation and the fertilization of the egg, which usually happens at least 10 days after the first day of the mother’s menstrual period.

Because there are many factors surrounding conception, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date of conception. This calculator helps to estimate the date range of real conception and a possible range of days during which sexual intercourse might have led to conception. There are a few methods that can be used to estimate the conception dates:

    Last Menstrual Period

Conception usually occurs around 11-21 days after the first day of the last period of a woman who has a regular period. The estimation of conception date is based on this, but is rarely ever exact since it is difficult to know exactly when ovulation occurs. Estimating conception date can also be more difficult for women who have irregular periods, or for those who don’t remember the first day of their last period. In cases like these, one of the more accurate ways to estimate gestational age is through the use of an ultrasound.

How Many Days After Your Period Can You Get Pregnant

A female can get pregnant at any time during her menstrual cycle. The likelihood of pregnancy is highest during ovulation, which is typically days 10-14.

Intermenstrual bleeding can occur between periods. To pinpoint the start of a menstrual cycle, a female must correctly identify their actual period.

    Weeks Pregnant: First Ultrasound

You wont necessarily be having your first ultrasound when youre 5 weeks pregnant. In many cases, your doctor will schedule an appointment and ultrasound around weeks 8 or 9.

If there are any risks associated with your pregnancy, you might still get an ultrasound this week. A specialist is able to see the fertilized egg approximately in week 5 of the pregnancy. The heartbeat can be heard in week 6.

Usually, during pregnancy, an ultrasound is carried out using an abdominal sensor, but during the early pregnancy stages, a doctor can still perform a transvaginal examination.

The first ultrasound examination helps to confirm the heartbeat of the fetus and the fact that the pregnancy is not ectopic. Later, it allows you to see the location of the placenta and the umbilical cord, as well as to assess the overall condition of the child. Ultrasound enables one to monitor a successful course of pregnancy.

    Using Ovulation Test Kits

Ovulation predictor kits are available from chemists and are quite easy to use. They work by detecting a hormone in your wee that increases when ovulation is about to take place. The simplest urine kits test for luteinising hormone , which surges 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. This will help to identify the best 2 days for conception, although you can be fertile for a day or so before and after this time.

It is best to become familiar with your usual menstrual cycle to help figure out when you should start testing. If you have an irregular cycle, then an ovulation predictor kit can help you identify the time of ovulation, but you will probably end up using a lot more of the test strips. There is also no evidence that using an ovulation predictor kit will improve your chances of getting pregnant naturally.

Can The Pregnancy Conception Calculator Be Wrong

Yes, of course. So, when does conception happen? There is no possibility being 100 % sure about it. You may be a little bit more certain if you track your cycle and have it perfectly regular. But even ultrasounds and blood tests aren’t faultless. Remember, that your fertile window begins up to 5 days before ovulation and ends one day after it. So, although your conception date is, e.g., 11 July 2019, the intercourse that caused the pregnancy may have occurred as early as 6 July. However, with our conception calendar calculator, you can make an estimated guess!
