Contraceptive implants are thin, small , flexible rods which are implanted under the skin of the upper arm by a doctor or a nurse. They are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
The implant rods contain progestins which are steadily released into the womans bloodstream. Progestins are like the hormone progesterone, which is produced naturally within a womans body.
The continuous release of progestins stops a woman releasing an egg every month , and thickens the mucus from the cervix , making it difficult for sperm to pass through to the womb and reach an unfertilized egg.
Implants protect against pregnancy soon after as they have been inserted. Depending on the type of implant, they last between 3-5 years, but can be removed at any time. Fertility returns when the implant is removed.
Some women experience side effects form implants. It is common, but not harmful, to experience changes in menstrual bleeding patterns. Other possible side effects include abdominal pain, headaches, breast tenderness and acne. Side-effects often diminish over time, especially after the first few months to a year of use, but if you are concerned about side effects, you should go and talk to your provider.
When fitting the implant, a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. It makes a small wound in the arm, which is closed with a dressing and does not need stitches.

How Is It Inserted
An area on the inner arm above the elbow is first numbed with local anaesthetic. Then the doctor or nurse puts the implant under the skin. After the implant is inserted, a band aid or dressing is put on which should stay on for 3-5 days. The arm is bandaged to reduce bruising and this should be left on for 24 hours.

What Happens If I Get Pregnant On The Implant
In the very rare chance you become pregnant whilst using the contraceptive implant then you should contact your doctor. If you become pregnant whilst on Nexplanon, then you have a slightly higher risk of an ectopic pregnancy . If you experience unusual vaginal bleeding or lower stomach pain then you must call your doctor immediately. The Nexplanon implant should be removed if pregnancy occurs, but there is no evidence to suggest falling pregnant whilst using the implant poses any harm to the developing pregnancy.

You should not have sexual intercourse 7 day before removing the implant if you do not wish to become pregnant. If you wish to have sexual intercourse then a barrier method should be used. There is a risk of you becoming pregnant once the implant is removed because the sperm can live for up to 7 days, and can fertilise the egg.

Does The Morning After Pill Affect Fertility
The short answer: The morning after pill doesnt affect long-term future fertility.
The long answer: Similar to the combined contraceptive pill, the morning after pill is designed to prevent pregnancy by delaying or preventing ovulation. This method of emergency contraception has no effect on future fertility. There is no evidence to suggest that the morning after pill affects fertility in any way except by preventing pregnancy in the short-term as intended.

When It Starts To Work
You can have the implant put in at any time during your menstrual cycle, as long as youre not pregnant.
If the implant is fitted during the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle, youll be immediately protected against becoming pregnant.
If its fitted on any other day of your menstrual cycle, youll need to use additional contraception for 7 days.

Im starting to worry about my fertility returning as Ive seen so many women say its taken them months, even years to get pregnant again after the implant. Hi. I had mine removed on 7th Nov as we are ttc. I had regular bleeding in my last year of implant so based on that I expected AF on 21/11 but only had some spotting. Even thought I might have been pregnant but nope. Now on day 40 based on Ovia & think I will soon ovulate based on OPKs so at least I know things are working now. I think everyone is different but thats my story.I would suggest OPKs just to learn what your body is doing.Good luck, here if you have questions.

Myth: Complications With Method
Some women who seek family planning believe that implants can cause complications in the arm in which they are inserted or that they can travel from the insertion site to other parts of the body.
Fact: Implants cannot travel to other parts of the body
They remain where they are inserted until they are removed. In rare cases, a rod may start to come out of the skin, usually during the first four months since insertion. This typically happens because the implants were not inserted well or because of an infection at the insertion site. If expulsion occurs, the woman should return to the clinic as soon as possible and use a back-up family planning method in the meantime. Providers can replace the rods.
