How Long After Iud Removal Will I Get My Period

Most women who have had an IUD for several years will get their period back within two to four weeks of having it removed. Some women will not see the return of their periods after the removal of an IUD for a little longer. If you don’t get your period by the three-month mark, or if your period is particularly light and/or irregular, you might want to talk to your doctor.

The copper in the device creates a local inflammatory response that can cause your body to hold on to endometrial tissue as a self defense mechanism. This is why many women do not start having periods at all once they have an IUD inserted, and can be the reason they are slower to get back to normal after it’s removed.

Is It Possible For Pregnancy After Mirena Removal

The Mirena IUD is a contraceptive that relies on releasing hormones. It is placed within the uterus and will directly deliver a small quantity of the hormone progestin to the uterus. As a contraceptive method, Mirena will need to be placed by your doctor or healthcare provider and can be effective for five years. The placement of the IUD will occur within seven days after the start of your menstrual period and has an effectiveness of 99%.

If you have a Mirena IUD and decide you want to get pregnant, your doctor can remove the IUD for you. Although the contraceptive effects of the device should disappear immediately, most health care professionals recommend waiting one menstrual cycle or more before you try to conceive as this will allow your body to return to its former natural rhythm. About 80% of women who attempt to conceive after having their Mirena IUD removed will successfully conceive within a year of the devices removal.

Other Womens Experiences On Getting Pregnant After Mirena

Here are some experiences shared by women who were able to conceive after Mirena removal.

Karen expresses her surprise at finding out that she was pregnant very soon after the removal of Mirena from her uterus. She bled for a few days after the device was removed. She did not, however, have her period in the days after the removal. After about thirty-five days when there was no sign of her period, she decided to do a pregnancy test and found out that she was expecting a baby. Karen also explains that a possible reason for such a quick pregnancy is that when Mirena is removed, the body is able to release all the hormones that Mirena had prevented from being released. As a result of their large concentration, it gets much easier to conceive.

Jodis Mirena was removed in August and she had a light period in September. The couple attempted artificial insemination at the beginning of October and it worked. She recounts the symptoms of getting pregnant after Mirena removal: sore breasts, bloating, morning sickness, but most of all, she also experienced the symptom she had previously unheard of. This was the feeling of intense thirst at all times. She took a pregnancy test five days before her period was due and it turned out positive.

Fertility Depends On The Type Of Contraceptive Device Used

Whichever type of IUD you have, you can consult with your doctor about scheduling an IUD removal procedure at a time in your cycle that will enhance your chances of getting pregnant. Your doctor may recommend that you wait for a cycle or two before you try to get pregnant so that you can pinpoint with better accuracy the date of conception. The removal process may cause minor bleeding and spotting for a couple of days and you may have some difficulty identifying where you are in your menstrual cycle as a result.

Copper IUDA copper IUD does not use hormones to prevent pregnancy. Copper IUDs work because the copper creates a hostile environment in your uterus for sperm. Your normal menstrual cycle was not affected by a copper IUD thus, your body does not need any time to return to its normal cycle. Pregnancy can occur immediately upon its removal.

Hormonal IUDWith a hormonal IUD, pregnancy was prevented by releasing progestin hormones into your body. Depending on the type of hormonal IUD you used, the hormones affect your normal menstrual cycle by impairing your bodys ability to release a fertile egg. Removing the IUD also removes the hormones that prevent pregnancy. It is therefore possible for you to get pregnant in the first cycle you have without the IUD. In some cases, however, your body may need a week or two to resume its normal cycle before you can become fertile.

What Are The Potential Side Effects Of Having An Iud Removed

After IUD removal, Dr. White says it is normal to have light spotting or mild cramping. But these symptoms are typically short-lived. As long as the bleeding isnt heavy and goes away in a few hours or, at worst, a couple of days, theres no need to worry.

As a general rule, the ACOG says that heavy bleeding involves soaking through one or more tampons or pads every hour for several hours, any bleeding that requires you to wear more than one pad at a time, or bleeding that includes clots that are as big as a quarter or larger. If your bleeding meets these criteria, its best to touch base with your doctor.

If youre wondering whether removing an IUD could cause weight changes, unfortunately, the answer is not clear-cut and varies by person. For example, if you have Paragard, youre unlikely to notice many changes in your weight after removal since it is a non-hormonal device and does not list weight gain or bloating as a potential side effect. But if you have a hormonal IUD and experienced weight changes or bloating after insertion, you may notice a change in weight or how you feel after having it removed. That said, there is minimal research pointing to weight loss or gain as a side effect of IUD removaland weight is a complex topic thats influenced by many factors beyond the birth control method you use.
