Early pregnancy is all about excitement, nerves, and lots of hormones that bring about various symptoms. Its exciting, but can also be full of new-to-you feelings.

You might start to feel things that resemble PMS symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, sore breasts, cramping, frequent urination, extra gas or bloating. Then theres the dreaded morning sickness that many pregnant folks experience early on.

But all of these not-so-fun symptoms mean that your body is producing the right hormones at the right time to start supporting the development of your beautiful baby!

Lets talk about all thats happening to you at 6 weeks pregnant.

What Can They Tell You At The Ultrasound

Dont freak out if the technician doesnt say much. Depending on the province and medical clinic, they may or may not be able to give you details about your baby, such as heartbeat and size. Most clinics will fax the results to your doctor for a follow-up appointment. If theres a concern, they may get you to speak to someone right after your ultrasound appointment.

What Does My Baby Look Like

Your baby, or embryo, is around 6mm long, which is about the size of a baked bean. It looks like a bit like a baked bean too, due to its curved shape. Some people think it resembles a tadpole with its little tail.

There’s a bump where the heart is and another bulge where the head will be. Sometimes the heart beat can be picked up by a vaginal ultrasound scan, but you’re unlikely to be offered one, unless you’ve had IVF. The little arms and legs are starting to form and are known as limb buds. There are tiny dents where the ears will be. The embryo is covered with a thin layer of transparent skin.

It might not look much like a baby now⦠but it’s a work in progress!

If you are already having vaginal bleeding due to a miscarriage, you should know it will take some days to ease off.

This depends on the gestation age of the pregnancy, if its a twin or single pregnancy and if you are experiencing severe cramps.

If you are bleeding so much, your doctor will quickly evacuate your womb to prevent further blood loss. This usually stops bleeding, though its okay to have light spotting and cramps for a few days after.

When Is The First Ultrasound During Pregnancy

Your doctor will usually wait until at least six weeks to perform the first ultrasound. However, if your periods are irregular or youve had a history of complications, such as an ectopic pregnancy, a miscarriage, pain, or bleeding, your doctor might send you for an earlier scan, says Susan Kinnear, manager of diagnostic imaging at Hamilton Health Sciences Centre and director at large for Sonography Canada. Generally, if your period is regular and you know the guesstimated date of conception, you wont have your first ultrasound until you are closer to the end of the first trimester, at 11 to 14 weeks.

What exactly is your baby up to in there when youre 6 weeks pregnant?

If you were able to look closely at your babys body, you would see four tiny buds.

As your baby grows, these limb buds will soon become your babys arms and legs. On each side of your babys head, an eye has already started to develop.

During the coming weeks, the eyes move into the correct position and recognizable facial features begin to develop.

Nose, mouth, and ears are also taking shape and form your babys face.

The lungs are just starting to appear, along with the kidneys and intestines.

Between pregnancy weeks 4 and 6, your babys neural tube forms and then closes this later becomes your babys spinal cord, spine, brain, and skull. If this fails to close properly during fetal development, your baby will develop whats known as a neural tube defect or NTD.

Most care providers will recommend pregnant women take a daily dose of folic acid, which is known to prevent, or reduce the chances of your baby developing a NTD, such as spina bifida.

The ultrasound scan also shows the direction of blood flow. It also helps in identifying the exact location of the pregnancy. Whats On Your Mind This Week

Is it safe to have a drink?Nine months is a long time to go without a glass of wineor beerwe get it. But research tells us that its a sacrifice well worth making. We know that alcohol in the mothers blood will be passed to the unborn baby, and regular consumption can affect many developmental processes and lead to miscarriage, stillbirth and lifelong physical, behavioural and intellectual disabilities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders .

What isnt clear is whether small or occasional amounts of alcohol can have the same effect. Its especially difficult to answer this question because it cant be tested on pregnant women and because women have different levels of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol . Putting alcohol on your dont list, especially during the first trimester, is your safest bet.

Do I have to give up coffee? The short answer is no. We know that fatigue during the first trimester may have you feeling like youre walking through quicksand and the last thing you want is to add caffeine withdrawal to your list of symptoms. Though you may have to cut back on caffeine, you dont have to cut it out completely. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends no more than 300 milligrams of caffeine each day because consuming too much caffeine during pregnancy has been linked to low birth weight and miscarriage.
