Drink Before Or After A Meal Not During
Staying hydrated is important, especially if youre vomiting. Drink small amounts of fluid throughout the day, but limit fluid intake during meals to avoid feeling too full. Drink 30 minutes before or after a meal instead. If you prefer drinking with your meal, have a small glass of water rather than a beverage containing sugar, as too much sugar can upset your stomach.
Eat Small Meals Instead Of Big Meals
Break up the portions and timing of your meals. Hormones produced during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, slow down your digestive system muscles making it harder to digest larger meals. Eat smaller portions and eat more frequently throughout the day. Having an empty stomach or low blood sugar can cause nausea or make nausea worse. Eating small meals every few hours can keep your blood sugar steady and your stomach feeling full, but not too full. If youre battling morning sickness, also stay away from spicy foods. Youll want to eat foods you know are easy to digest.
Safe Allergy Remedies During Pregnancy
- Oral antihistamines, like cetirizine , chlorpheniramine , diphenhydramine , fexofenadine , and loratadine seem to be safe. So does cromolyn sodium nasal spray and the steroid nasal spray Rhinocort, according to Web MD.
- Allergy shots: If you took allergy shots before pregnancy, your doctor might recommend you continue taking them. But do not start them while pregnant.
- Sudafed 30-60 mg every 4-6 hours can be used in the second and third trimesters in women without gestational hypertension. Avoid use in the first trimester and with breastfeeding. Sudafed PE should be avoided because of its uncertain efficacy and safety in pregnancy.
Allergy Medications to Avoid During Pregnancy
- Decongestants: During your first trimester, dont take decongestants by mouth, according to Web MD. Decongestants may make some birth defects more likely. Watch out for antihistamines combined with a decongestant. Because theres not enough evidence for their safety, avoid antihistamine nasal sprays.
- Mucinex, Mucinex D, Mucinex DM, and the extra-strength versions of each, because the six forms of Mucinex contain guaifenesin. Avoid taking any of these during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, they may be safe to use during later trimesters. Ask your doctor.
Differential Diagnosis And Evaluation
The management of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy depends on the severity of the symptoms. Treatment measures range from dietary changes to more aggressive approaches involving antiemetic medications, hospitalization, or even total parenteral nutrition . We prefer to start with dietary changes and then add medications as necessary. A Cochrane review of various nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum was recently published.16

Try Relaxing Your Muscles
Relaxing your muscles may help relieve nausea.
One technique people have used to achieve this effect is known as progressive muscle relaxation . It requires individuals to tense and relax their muscles in a continuous sequence as a way to achieve physical and mental relaxation .
One recent review found that PMR is an effective way to reduce the severity of nausea resulting from chemotherapy .
Another way to relieve muscle tension is through massage.
In one study, a group of chemotherapy patients were given a 20-minute lower arm or lower leg massage during their treatment.
Compared to those given no massage, the massaged participants were about 24% less likely to get nauseous afterward (
For pregnant women who are experiencing nausea, vitamin B6 is a safe and potentially effective alternative to anti-nausea medications.
Measures Of Nausea Health Disorders And Conventional And Herbal Medicines Use During Pregnancy
The respondents were presented with a list of questions related to different health disorders/short-term illnesses during pregnancy, including nausea, and asked if they had any of these illnesses. In case of an affirmative response, the respondents were asked about medicine use related to each individual illness. The medicines used were reported in free-text entry fields. The timing of use for both conventional and herbal medicines could also be reported and were defined by the three possible exposure windows included in the questionnaire: weeks 112 weeks 1324 , and week 25 to delivery . A list of chronic disorders was also presented to the respondents, including cardiovascular and rheumatic disorders, diabetes and epilepsy, and an open-ended option. Furthermore, the women were presented with a question on sick leave during pregnancy .
Any use of herbal medicines was specifically requested, including the name of the product, reason for its use, and the timing of use during pregnancy. The name of the herbal medicine and the reason for its use were reported as free-text entry fields. Herbal medicine could also be reported under the disease-specific questions and the questions about OTC medicine. Herbal medicines were identified by name and coded in accordance with a pre-determined list of herbs .

Pregnancy And Nausea: Which Medications Are Safe And Effective To Use
It may come as no surprise that up to 80% of women experience nausea during pregnancy, especially in the early stages. Severe nausea and vomiting is a reason for higher rates of pregnancy termination. So, it follows that the early, effective, and safe treatment of nausea is crucial for both the mothers and the infants health. Because medications are prescribed to manage vomiting and nausea in the first trimester , pregnant women and clinicians often have concerns about the potential effects of anti-nausea or antiemetic drugs.
Malformations at birth are exceptionally rare, so finding the cause and effect of a single drug and resulting abnormality is extremely difficult. A recent study of 1.8 million pregnancies showed a direct correlation between the use of specific anti-nausea medications with a risk of birth abnormalities. Due to these concerns, Health Canada recommends NOT to use ondansetron for managing nausea during pregnancy. Pharmacogenetics, the study of how a persons genetics and medications interact, can check whether commonly used anti-nausea drugs will be effective for an individuals metabolism. Drugs such as dolasetron, ondansetron, palonosetron, and tropisetron can have varied effectiveness from person to person based on genetics. Pharmacogenetics may also help to understand the risks associated with these drugs.

Tips To Help Survive Nausea During Pregnancy
Positive pink line on pregnancy test? Check. Small flutter on early ultrasound? Check. Nausea and vomiting? Double-check.
Often the constant feeling of nausea, which is accompanied by vomiting, soon overshadows the excitement of early pregnancy. Approximately 50-90 percent of women experience nausea and vomiting in their pregnancy, and 5 percent of women have the same symptoms throughout the entire pregnancy, per The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
“The term ‘morning sickness‘ is misleading nausea can occur any time of the day,” says Emily Linklater, D.O., Mayo Clinic Health System OB/GYN physician. “For most women, the nausea ends sometime in the late stages of the first trimester. Nausea may also be worse or better in one pregnancy versus another.”
Unfortunately, science hasnt proven the exact cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. The elevated pregnancy hormone, BHCG, and elevated estrogen have both been hypothesized as contributing to symptoms.
What can an expectant mother do? Here are some tips for surviving nausea and vomiting:
If over-the-counter options do not improve nausea and vomiting, then its wise to speak with your health care provider about anti-nausea prescription medications. Many prescription medications are safe in pregnancy and can relieve severe symptoms.

Managing Nausea And Vomiting In Pregnancy
The systematic review conducted to inform these Guidelines identified additional evidence that was consistent with the NICE guidelines. The highest quality study, a Cochrane review examined 27 trials of interventions including acustimulation, acupuncture, ginger, vitamin B6 and several antiemetic medicines. Systematic review of studies in this area is complicated by the heterogeneity of studies and limited information on outcomes .
The available evidence suggests the following:
It is currently not possible to identify with certainty interventions for nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy that are both safe and effective . As nausea and vomiting mostly resolves within 16 to 20 weeks with no harm to the pregnancy, prescribed treatment in the first trimester is usually not indicated unless the symptoms are severe and debilitating .
- Practice point
Women who experience nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can be advised that, while it may be distressing, it usually resolves spontaneously by 16 to 20 weeks pregnancy and is not generally associated with a poor pregnancy outcome.

Nausea And Vomiting Of Pregnancy
HOWARD ERNEST HERRELL, MD, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee
Am Fam Physician. 2014 Jun 15 89:965-970.
Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy affects nearly 75% of pregnant women. The exact cause is unknown. In most cases, it is a mild, self-limited condition that can be controlled with conservative measures and has no adverse fetal sequelae. About 1% of women develop hyper-emesis gravidarum, which may result in adverse outcomes for the mother and fetus. Patients with nausea and vomiting of pregnancy should be evaluated for other causes, particularly if symptoms are unremitting or presentation is atypical. Initial treatment is conservative and includes dietary changes, emotional support, and vitamin B6 supplementation. Several safe and effective pharmacologic therapies are available for women who do not improve with initial treatment. Women with hyperemesis gravidarum may require more aggressive interventions, including hospitalization, rehydration therapy, and parenteral nutrition.
Nausea and vomiting occur in up to 74% of pregnant women, and 50% experience vomiting alone.1,2 Although the term morning sickness is commonly used to describe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, the timing, severity, and duration of symptoms vary widely. Approximately 80% of women report that their symptoms last all day, whereas only 1.8% report symptoms that occur solely in the morning.2

Common Uses For Zofran During Pregnancy
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy typically occur in the first trimester and are very common. Youre probably interested in how to stop the awful feeling, especially if you feel like youve tried every trick in the book. Enter Zofran.
Zofran is the trade name for ondansetron. Its a drug that blocks the action of serotonin, a naturally occurring substance that can lead to nausea and vomiting.
It was originally used to treat nausea associated with chemotherapy or surgery. Its still used and approved by the Food and Drug Administration for this purpose. But now, Zofran has also become a frequently prescribed drug to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the off-label use of ondansetron for nausea in pregnancy meaning that its not FDA-approved for this purpose went from about 1 in 100 before 2000 to about 1 in 10 by 2011.
Morning sickness can probably be blamed on human chorionic gonadotropin , a hormone released by the placenta. When the nausea and vomiting become so bad they lead to weight loss and dehydration, your doctor may diagnose you with hyperemesis gravidarum and prescribe other medications.
The general, researched-baked consensus of the past was that Zofran is relatively safe in all trimesters. However, now some people suggest otherwise.
If youre on antidepressants or other medications that affect serotonin levels, you shouldnt take Zofran.

Keep Ginger Lemons And Watermelon Handy
While certain smells can make your nausea worse, sniffing certain fresh scents may help. Sniff fresh cut lemons or ginger for nausea relief. Drinking lemonade, ginger ale and eating watermelon works for many women as well. Ginger is proven to be effective in treating and preventing symptoms of morning sickness. Keep ginger candies on hand to help relieve nausea or make your own ginger tea. Peel and slice fresh ginger root, then add a 2-inch piece to boiling water. Let steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain into a cup. Sip or drink slowly to enjoy.
