Sleep During The 3rd Trimester
Its important from 28 weeks till your baby is born that you sleep on your side. Whether you are taking a quick nap on the couch or going to bed at night, sleeping on your side is best.
Lying on your back puts pressure on major blood vessels. This can reduce the flow of blood to your womb, and restrict your babys oxygen supply. Research has shown that sleeping on your side can reduce the risk of stillbirth by half.
You can make it more comfortable, and easier to stay on your side, by bending your knees then putting a pillow between them. You can also put a pillow under your belly for support.
If you wake and find youve been asleep on your back, turn onto your side. If it happens a lot, put a pillow behind your back so rolling over onto your back is more difficult.
Some women find it comfortable to sleep with their head quite high, either with pillows for support or by raising the head of the bed a little. This can reduce heartburn and snoring.
You might find your back aches more at night. If you can, try to avoid heavy lifting, housework and long periods of standing. And as mentioned before, rest during the day with your legs up, if you can.
The frequency of your need to pass urine at night might increase even further. The baby might be pressing on your bladder, and the hormones that go with the later stages of pregnancy can relax your pelvic floor. Pelvic floor exercises will help you manage any leaks and also avoid continence problems in years to come.

Like the perfect maternity outfit, sleep is something many pregnant women covet. My second and third pregnancies, for instance, were plagued with such bad morning sickness that I was left vomiting throughout the night. When that eased, my sons kicking became so intense that one particularly sharp jab in the middle of the night caused me to awake to soaked sheets Id peed all over my bed.
According to one study published in the journal Sleep Medicine in 2015, most women experience some type of sleep problem during pregnancy. Of the 2,427 women surveyed, for example, all reported frequent nighttime wakings while they were pregnant nearly 60 percent reported insomnia and about 80 percent found it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position.
Still, after reviewing the latest scientific studies and recommendations and consulting with three ob-gyns, one sleep expert and a professor of nursing whos well-versed in the topic, I found several research-backed strategies to help you get a sounder snooze.

How Effective Are Sleeping Pills
Studies show that sleeping pills arent that helpful in promoting a good nights rest. Most people who take sleep aids fall asleep about eight to 20 minutes faster than those without medicine. On average, you might get an additional 35 minutes of shuteye.
Generally, sleep aids should be for short-term use. They may be most helpful if a stressful life event, such as a divorce or death in the family, is keeping you awake.
Sleep During The 2nd Trimester
The second trimester brings new challenges.
Many women get a blocked nose and feel stuffed up due to hormonal changes. Saline nasal sprays can help.
Leg cramps can also disrupt your sleep. Its not really understood why leg cramps happen, but there are a number of things you can do to ease them, such as stretching your calf muscles, being active during the day and drinking plenty of fluids.
Some women have more dreams than they would normally, or unusual dreams, or nightmares. Sometimes it can be related to stress, or it could be inconsistent sleep. Try to stick to a regular schedule and maybe try different sleep positions or use a pregnancy pillow. If you are having dreams that are disturbing you, it can help to talk to your partner or a friend, or consider talking to a counsellor.
Some start to snore for the first time in their lives. Sleeping on your side and keeping your head slightly elevated can help. Maintaining a healthy diet and not putting on too much weight can also help.
Risks And Side Effects Of Taking Sleeping Pills When Pregnant
Sleeping pills and pregnancy do not go well hand in hand. That is the reason why sleeping pills recommended by doctors are very rare and under extreme conditions only. Sleep In The Second Trimester Of Pregnancy

Sleep And Your Mental Health
You may have trouble sleeping because youre anxious about giving birth, work, money, childcare or physical discomfort during the night. You may have always had insomnia.
But it is important not to let the fact that you are not sleeping make you even more anxious. If you are having periods of sleeplessness sometimes accepting it can be more relaxing. Remember that sleeplessness will not harm you or the baby.
Mental health problems can be treated with the right help and support, so tell your midwife or doctor if you feel low, depressed or anxious for most of the time for more than two weeks.

Using Sleeping Pills While Breastfeeding
The sleep deprivation common to nursing moms is legendary, so the thought of needing sleeping pills seems impossible, but it is not.
Despite having natural prolactin, a hormone released during nursing that promotes feelings of calmness and relaxation, and a mounting sleep debt, rest can be easily disrupted by anything from childbirth discomfort to swollen breasts and anxiety.
Sleeping pills while breastfeeding can be used short-term. Antihistamines are the best sleeping aids while breastfeeding because only small amounts are excreted in breast milk. However, the use should still be limited, and babies must be monitored for drowsiness. Extended use of sleeping pills is not advisable because some may interfere with milk production and result in crying, irritability, and sleep problems in babies.
Always consult a doctor before taking any medication when breastfeeding as some substances may harm a baby.

Transitions Between Prescription And Otc
As a general rule, over-the-counter drugs have to be used primarily to treat a condition that does not require the direct supervision of a doctor and must be proven to be reasonably safe and well tolerated. OTC drugs are usually also required to have little or no abuse potential, although in some areas drugs such as codeine are available OTC .
Over time, often 3â6 years, drugs that prove themselves safe and appropriate as prescription medicines may be switched from prescription to OTC. An example of this is diphenhydramine , an anti-histamine which once required a prescription but now is available OTC nearly everywhere. More recent examples are cimetidine and loratadine in the United States, and ibuprofen in Australia.
It is somewhat unusual for an OTC drug to be withdrawn from the market as a result of safety concerns, rather than market forces, though it does happen occasionally. For example, phenylpropanolamine was removed from sale in the United States over concern regarding strokes in young women. A study has been done examining consumer’s perceptions about the risk of and access to nonprescription medication. The study concluded that a small percentage of consumers prefer having access to medication over potential risks of taking non-prescribed medication.Ranitidine was suspended in multiple markets due to concerns over the presence of the carcinogenN-nitrosodimethylamine .
