What Does Your Baby Look Like
Your baby is starting to look like shes ready to come out. If she were to be born prematurely, she would have a very high chance of survival .
Also, if you were to look at your baby this week, she would look right back at you. Yes as you near two thirds of the way through pregnancy, your baby has opened her eyes for the first time.
Whats My Baby Doing At 27 Weeks Pregnant
Your babys brain is really active these days, as more brain tissue is developing. They’re an active foetus, sleeping and waking up regularly, opening and closing their eyes and sucking their fingers too.
If youre feeling any small rhythmic movements that feel like belly spasms, dont be alarmed: they’re just baby hiccups. Dont fret, as these movements are usually short-lived and dont harm your baby at all.
Your baby is as snuggly as ever too, most babies this age still like to assume the cosy curled position inside the uterus, AKA the foetal position.
In other exciting news, your babys auditory development will be better than ever as the network of nerves to the ears matures, and they may now recognise both yours and your partners voices.
Your babys eyes will also be developing. The irises the coloured part of the eye will have started to develop pigment by now. Many babies are born with blue eyes because theyre still making melanin. Often the colour changes during infancy, going from blue to green, hazel or brown. The more melanin you have , the darker your eye colour. So its likely that if youre brown-eyed your bub will be too. But youll know for sure by the time your baby is around two years old.
Your Babys Growth During Pregnancy Week 27
There are quite a few developments in the baby by the 27th week of pregnancy like:
- The baby will be opening her eyes and their eyelashes would have formed.
- The baby will start practising breathing movements even though they are still in the amniotic sac.
- Babies have about 15% fat on their body at this stage, which will grow to 30% by the time they are born.
- The babys heartbeat would have become strong by now and can be heard through the baby bump.
Each of the babys movements during this phase lasts for a few seconds and it is essential for you to relax and enjoy each of them.

Your Life At 27 Weeks Pregnant
As you settle into the last days of the second trimester, keep being kind to yourself and your body.
- Top tip: Sleep inas long and as often as possible. Lounging around is going to be a major luxury soon, so take full advantage of lazy mornings. When you get hungry, go ahead and eat in bed. Crumbs? Who cares! Youll get to those later, when youre well rested.
- Get ready: When it comes to breastfeeding, you may be thinking, boobs + hungry baby = successful breastfeeding, right? But depending on your babys ability to latch, your milk supply and a whole bunch of other factors, breastfeeding can be far more complicated than it appears. If you decide you want to try it, get the downlow on the letdown, plugged ducts and other ins and outs of breastfeeding and look for classes in your area and check out The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, Latch and The Nursing Mothers Companion for informative reads.
- Something to consider: A warm mug of magnesium before bed doesnt sound all that enticing, but Calm, which comes as a powder you mix into water, can relax your muscles to help you sleep easier, improve restless leg syndrome and reduce constipation. As with all supplements during pregnancy, check with your doctor to ask about a serving size thats right for you.
- Helpful hint: Always stop for a bathroom break, even if you dont technically need to go. As your uterus grows, your bladder shrinks. Sneak as many trips to the bathroom as necessary to avoid emergencies.
What You Need To Shop For
Since you are almost at the last phase of your pregnancy you should start planning to shop for things you may require:
- Start shopping for accessories for the baby nursery and for baby furniture.
- Start shopping for things you will require at the hospital and at home like nursing bras and nightwear. For jeans, you can opt for maternity jeans which come with a band that stretches around the waist. You can go for these as soon as your regular jeans start getting snug. You can check out Bella Mamas maternity track pants too as they are super comfortable. For your baby, you can get baby clothes, a car seat, diapers, and wipes.
Although this is one of the least important things right now, you may want to think about postpartum birth control. This might be a decision you want to take before the baby is born.

What Does A 27
If you could peek at baby at 27 weeks in the womb, youd see your little 27-week-old fetus has continued to put on some fat and muscle with all that moving and dancing in your 27 weeks pregnant belly. Although baby at 27 weeks is just the size of a head of lettuce, theyre over a foot long now and basically a smaller, skinnier version of the baby youll meet when theyre born. Baby is learning to suck now too, so they might be sucking their thumb in utero right now! Awww.

At Your Doctors Office
The CDC recommends that all pregnant people get the whooping cough vaccine between 27 and 36 weeks of each pregnancy. Because babies cannot be vaccinated against whooping cough until they are 2 months old, its important that you pass the antibodies to your baby before birth by getting the Tdap yourself.
It takes time to make and pass the antibodies to the baby. To maximize your antibody response, its best to get the shot as close to 27 weeks as possible. The vaccine is safe for both you and your baby.
The most common side effects of the vaccine include:
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
Once you are vaccinated, you won’t contract whooping cough and risk passing it to your baby, and through your immunity, your baby will be better protected against it from outside sources. However, other people who are not vaccinated can still pass this serious illness to your baby. It’s important that your partner and anyone else who will be close to your baby is vaccinated as well.
Weeks Pregnant: Your Belly
The growth of your belly is pretty much full-throttle at this point. Your baby is working hard to pack on the pounds and fill out all that wrinkly skin.
You might be feeling pressure in different places on the inside. The hardest, bulkiest part of your baby is his/her head, so your pressure is likely dependent on its placement.
Babies obviously dont know what is and what isnt comfortable for you, so if you feel uncomfortable, try moving or changing positions. This will often encourage baby to move, as well.

Weeks Pregnant: Whats Going On In There
This is the last week of your second trimester. At 27 weeks pregnant, the baby is now as big as a slice of pizzaabout 37 centimetres long with her legs stretched outand she weighs about 862 grams . Her brain is becoming more active, her eyes are opening and closing, and she is probably sucking her fingers from time to time, too.
Are There Any Symptoms You Should Be Looking Out For
Constipation is a common issue and half of all pregnant women are likely to suffer this annoying pregnancy symptom at one point or another during their pregnancy. Constipation occurs partly because of the amount of progesterone released by the body. This particular pregnancy hormone acts as muscle relaxant, so your usually strong bowel muscles are less able to complete the process of peristalsis i.e moving the waste products through your system.
Your diet can relieve both constipation and haemorrhoids. Eating a lot of fibre and making sure you drink plenty of water will help keep your digestion working well. These measures will also help to soften your stool, meaning that you wont have to aggravate your piles by pushing too hard. Another remedy that can aid the recovery from both symptoms is gentle exercising.

Assuming you do manage to get some shut-eye, you may find you are no longer the most alluring of bedfellows. The combination of extra weight and swollen mucous membranes in your nose disturbing the air flow makes snoring almost inevitable. Hopefully, you won’t wake yourself up at least. If your partner is rude enough to complain show them to the sofa.
Weeks Pregnant: With Twins
Averaging two pounds each, your babies are crowding you out. And, fast!
Your bladder might be feeling a little pressured lately. Its not uncommon to pee a little when you sneeze, cough, or laugh.
Because of the increased vaginal discharge, you might already be sporting a panty liner, so youre covered anyway.

Your Baby At 27 Weeks
Your baby is an astounding four times as long this week as he was in week 12 and all his organs are growing and developing adding the finishing touches.
- His lungs, heart and liver are all getting more mature and with every day that goes by he would be increasingly likely to survive outside of the womb if born premature.
- His long bones are continuing to make red blood cells.
- He is getting chubbier but it’s a slow process. Less than 5% of his body is made up of fat at the moment. But he will look more and more like the sort of baby youd recognise as the rest of his body finally catches up in size with his head.
- The hair on his scalp is getting thicker and longer.
How Is Your Body Changing At 27 Weeks Pregnant
Are you getting tingling in your hands? If it only seems to affect the thumb, first and second and half your fourth finger then you may find its carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel happens because the nerve that supplies this part of your hand is squashed in the tunnel of bones in your wrist by the extra fluid you retain in pregnancy. It will disappear after birth but it’s annoying and unpleasant in the meantime, particularly at night, and you can often wake up because of the pain and discomfort. Making sure your elbows are not higher than your hands when working at a desk can help.
You can also wear wrist splints to take pressure off the nerve. If it does seem to get worse at night and you may find you cant really lift anything first thing in the morning. Try placing a pillow next to you in bed and raising them up on that.

What Changes Are Occurring With Your Body
By 27 weeks pregnant, you can feel your baby move much more. Some of your babys movements could be due to hiccups, while others feel like your baby is participating in an aerobic workout. Many women find these movements comforting, and these often help strengthen the bonding process between mother and child. Many women ask questions concerning how often they should feel their baby move. Later in pregnancy, you may be asked to determine your babys kick count, but for now, you just want to make general comparisons. If your baby seems less active than normal, it is important to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Baby Recognizes Your Voices
Big news: Your baby may recognize both your and your partner’s voices by now.
His auditory development, or hearing, is progressing as the network of nerves to the ears matures though the sounds he hears are muffled thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering them.
So this might be a good time to read and even sing to your baby or rather, your tummy and a good chance to start memorizing those nursery rhymes and lullabies you’ll need to be repeating pretty soon.
While you’re at it, here’s another way to have some family fun at 27 weeks pregnant: Your partner might be able to hear baby’s heartbeat by pressing an ear to your stomach.

Baby’s Development At 27 Weeks Pregnant
At 27 weeks your baby is developing nicely. All curled up, the size of your baby at 27 weeks is about the size of a cabbage.
Theres still plenty of growing to do though and your babys lungs are one of the last things to develop. Baby has all the right parts to start breathing but their air sacs have more growing to do and theyre yet to produce something called surfactant. This substance keeps the airways open and makes it possible for babys lungs to breathe in air after delivery. Itll be week 35 or so before they have enough to breathe properly.
Babys heart at this stage is fully developed and going strong. Something to look forward to hearing again at your next check-up.
Pregnancy Week 27 Fetal Development
Eyes proceed to develop and the baby’s retinae are forming. The baby is now developing his own waking and sleeping patterns so you might notice that she is getting into a schedule, a sort of a pattern, where she is awake and active and she’s sleeping and being more still.
The baby’s brain continues to form and develop. While there is no proof to this, experts claim that your baby is capable of dreaming right now. Keep in mind that the baby will also be highly responsive to sounds and temperature changes coming from the environment.
As the baby gets bigger, he or she might respond to different sensations. He may become more active while you’re walking in the streets, and the baby can hear the traffic sounds, and there might also be melodies or songs that excite her.
During the previous weeks of the pregnancy, expect the baby to kick more harshly when you’re drinking beverages that are very hot or very cold. Bonding with the baby during this time is great because the baby is able to hear and distinguish your voice as well as your partner’s.

What Position Is Baby In At 27 Weeks
Its hard to pin down an exact position for a 27 week fetus, thanks to all the moving and shaking theyre doing. Hopefully, theyll shuffle into a head-down position soon, which is best for a vaginal birth, but theres still plenty of time for them to change it up.
Keep going, mama! Youre doing great!
