Assisted Reproductive Technology And Gestational Age
In cases where assisted reproductive technology is used to conceive, the ART-derived gestational age is used to calculate the estimated date of delivery or due date. For example, with in-vitro fertilization, doctors would use the age of the embryo and the date of the transfer along with ultrasounds to determine how far along the pregnancy is.
How Far Along Am I Four Ways To Figure Out How Pregnant You Are
Youre itching to know when your little one will arrive. Heres how to calculate how far you are in your pregnancy.
Its a question youll hear over and over until youre holding a baby in your arms: When are you due? Everyone wants to know that magic date, and youre probably more than a little curious about how far along you are, too. Your due date may become a beacon or a deadline , but its important to remember that your due date will only ever be an estimate of the week youll give birth .
That said, theres one big reason why an accurate estimate is important: in case of complications. If a woman goes into labour early, then we really want to know how far along she is, as best as we can tell, says Carol Scurfield, medical director of the Womens Health Clinic in Winnipeg. A week can make a big difference as far as the health of the baby is concerned.
Do your best to calculate your due date as soon as you discover youre pregnant. Heres how to do it.
Measuring The Size Of Your Uterus
When you measure your uterus in pregnancy, you’re measuring your fundal height, or the distance from the pubic bone to the highest point on your belly. Fundal height measurements are most useful after 20 weeks gestation, at which point providers expect the height of your uterus to match the number of weeks you’ve been pregnant, Mayo Clinic noted. So if you’re been pregnant 22 weeks, you should have a fundal height measurement of 22 centimeters. Neat, huh?
Unfortunately, a host of factors can render fundal measurements less accurate. Certified midwife Mallorie Resendez Bassetti says measuring belly size is a common method for estimating due dates, but its not very accurate. Even from the beginning, a doctor or midwife can feel the uterus and estimate how many months along a woman is, but this is not very accurate, she says. Measurements could be off if the baby is growing too small, if there is a fibroid in the uterus, or if there are twins.
Mayo Clinic was careful to note that fundal measurements are generally taken to reassure women and their providers that baby is growing on schedule, and that it’s not a particularly accurate method of dating a pregnancy.

Super Early Signs Of Pregnancy How Soon Can I Tell If Im Pregnant
1. Missed Period
Sometimes the very first indicator for many women, a missed period is normally a good sign that a pregnancy has occurred.
However, its also not always the case. Periods can be delayed in general by stress or changes to your diet, and bleeding can even still occur throughout pregnancy.
If you havent yet missed your period, but would like to test early, home pregnancy tests such as First Response can detect pregnancy hormones up to six days prior to a missed period. But this is certainly not guaranteed.
Its better to wait until your period is actually missed so that your body is making enough hormones to detect and you can get an accurate result. You will also need to make sure you take the test properly.
Read the full instructions on how to do this towards the end of this page.
2. Nausea or Vomiting
Nausea is an extremely common side effect of pregnancy, especially early on. If you find yourself feeling nauseous for no reason you can pinpoint, dry retching or unexpectedly over the toilet, you may want to take a test.
Some women notice very light pink or brown spots of blood around a week two weeks after conception. This is the fertilized embryo implanting into the lining of the womb and is called implantation bleeding.
Finding yourself needing to sit down often, getting light-headed or wobbly on your feet, and unable to focus on things you normally can could indicate pregnancy.
Early Signs Of Pregnancy
For women who have a regular monthly menstrual cycle, the earliest and most reliable sign of pregnancy is a missed period.
If your period doesnt arrive as expected, you may be pregnant, but there can be other reasons for a missed period, such as illness, stress and strenuous activity.
Sometimes women who are pregnant have a very light period, losing only a little blood.
Some of the other early pregnancy signs and symptoms are listed below. Every woman is different and not all women will notice all these symptoms.

How Long Does It Take Hcg Levels To Be Detected By Home Pregnancy Tests
Pregnancy doesnât necessarily start the day that two people have sex. An egg can be fertilized by sperm up to six days after intercourse.5 And then, it can take between six and ten days for the egg to implant itself in the uterus.
The hormone that home pregnancy tests look for starts being released from when the fertilized egg implants itself, which is why you have to wait for them to be effective.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, HCG is made by cells formed in the placenta, which nourishes the egg after it is has implanted itself in the wall of the uterus.4
Levels of HCG can be detected by two kinds of tests:5
- Blood testâaccurate as early as 11 days after conception
- Urine testâaccurate as early as 12 to 14 days after conception
So, if you donât know when your period is supposed to start and you think you might be pregnant, you should test about two weeks after you had sex and possibly conceived.5
If itâs negative and your period still hasnât come and you still think you might be pregnant, test again in another week.

Are There Any Good Ways To Predict When Baby Will Come
Even though you have an estimate of when your unborn baby will arrive, there are a few other signs that labor is approaching. In addition to your water breaking and cervix dilating, pay attention to these changes your body may go through.
The baby has dropped
Once your unborn baby is in a head-down position, they’ll move into your pelvis to get ready to start heading out the birth canal. Not only might your bump look physically lower, but you’ll also likely experience more pressure on your bladder.
You are experieing contractions
You may have experienced Braxton-Hicks, or false labor contractions, throughout your pregnancy. Usually, they go awayif you lay down or drink waterbut if your contractions become more regular and/or consistent, it is usually a sign labor is approaching.
You lose your mucus plug and/or have a “bloody show”
No, it isn’t the most glamorous-sounding experience in the world, but it is a sign that your unborn baby is making their way out. The mucus plug blocks the opening of the cervix during pregnancy to protect the fetus from bacteria. So once your cervix begins to change and dilate, it will come loose to prepare the way for your little one.
The Diagnostic Uses Of Pregnancy Ultrasound
Apart from helping to pinpoint the unborn babys due date, pregnancy ultrasounds are used to diagnose a number of conditions including:
- Multiple fetuses
- Health problems with the baby
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Abnormalities of the placenta such as placenta praevia, where the placenta is positioned over the neck of the womb
- The health of the mothers reproductive organs.

How Do I Calculate My Due Date If I Had Ivf
If you used embryo cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization to get pregnant, you can use your IVF transfer date to calculate your due date. If your provider transferred the embryos five days after they retrieved your eggs, count ahead 261 days from the transfer date.
If your provider transferred the embryos three days after egg retrieval, count ahead 263 days to determine your due date. On your transfer day, your provider will calculate your due date and share this information with you.
What Is Gestational Age
Gestational age is the number of days or weeks that have passed since the first day of a pregnant persons last menstrual period. Knowing your gestational age while pregnant allows you and your health care provider to estimate your babys due date.
Gestational age describes where you are in your pregnancy. Its measured from the first day of your last menstrual period to the current date, typically in weeks. Usually, pregnancies last anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks babies born before the 37-week marker are considered premature.

Calculating From Your Last Menstrual Period
Pregnancies are 40 weeks, but you’re actually pregnant for only 38 of them. Why? Because for doctors, the pregnancy clock starts its countdown from the day of your last missed period the tricky date responsible for the infamous two-week wait when trying to conceive.
The absolute best way to date a pregnancy is from the date of conception, but Plancher says that can be hard to track, especially if you have sex often .
But the day of a missed menstrual period is also hard to track. I know that my period likes to take her sweet time arriving some months, while on others, she’s way ahead of schedule. If you’re the lucky lady with a Swiss cycle, I’ve got great news: you can figure out how far along you are, simply by counting backwards.
“If someone gets their period every 28 days, you can probably get a pretty good due date based on their last period, but thats rare. I like to confirm their LMP due date with an early ultrasound, Plancher says.
What Do I Need To Know About Using A Pregnancy Due Date Calculator
A due date calculator may not be completely accurate. This is especially true if you arent exactly sure when you had your last period, you have irregular periods or you dont know when you conceived. You should see your provider for a more precise test, such as an ultrasound, to confirm your due date.

What If You Dont Know Your Lmp Or Your Periods Are Irregular
In the case where you do not know the exact date of your last menstrual period or if you have not had a regular menstrual cycle, the doctor estimates the foetal age through ultrasound imaging. Parameters like the crown-rump length and the foetal sac measurements give an idea about the rough age of the foetus. Based on the foetal age, the expected delivery date is given by the doctor.
How To Use A Home Pregnancy Test Kit
Home pregnancy test kits vary in their sensitivity to hCG. Most test kits are best used about one to two weeks after your period was due. Always strictly follow the manufacturers instructions. Generally speaking, most home pregnancy tests follow the same basic principles:
- You collect urine in a small container and dip the test strip into the urine. Alternatively, some kits offer a test strip that you hold under your stream of urine.
- To improve accuracy of results, it is best to test your urine when you first get out of bed. Early morning urine is concentrated and contains higher levels of hCG than at other times of the day.
- Most test strips indicate the presence of hCG by the appearance of a coloured line or dot.
- Results are rapid. Most test kits take only a few minutes to complete.
- Most kits come with a second test strip. This allows you to test again at a later stage.

What Are The Different Ways To Estimate The Due Date Of A Pregnancy
The following ways help calculate how many weeks pregnant a woman is and the estimated due date.
Calculating by using the date of the last menstrual period
This is one of the most common, simple and most accurate ways to figure out how many weeks pregnant a woman is and estimate the approximate due date. The way to calculate the due date is to take the first date of the last normal period and add 280 days , which is the typical length of a normal pregnancy. The period that is to be tracked should be typical of a womans menstrual cycle. This means it should be the same number of days as a usual period, the same amount of bleeding and the same amount of discomfort. Thats because sometimes a woman may bleed after shes pregnant, but that bleeding is different from a normal period.
- The formula for calculating how many weeks pregnant a woman is the number of days since the first day of her last menstrual period divided by seven. So, the number of days since the start of LMP divided by seven equals the number of weeks pregnant
- The formula to calculate how many months pregnant a woman is the number of days since the first day of a womans last menstrual period divided by 30. This means the number of days since the start of LMP divided by 30 equals the number of months pregnant.

When Can You Find Out How Many Weeks Pregnant You Are
A woman can find out how many weeks pregnant she is at any time during pregnancy. There are several ways to calculate how many weeks pregnant a woman is and the estimated due date or estimated date of delivery . Some ways are more accurate than others. It may be calculated based on the womans last menstrual period , her urine levels of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin , fetal developmental milestones and an ultrasound. The due date is just an estimate and only about four percent of women give birth on their due date. Most women either deliver a little earlier or a little later than their estimated due date, which is normal because childbirth depends on several factors related to the mother and her fetus.
