How To Check If You Are Able To Get Pregnant

Light Or Heavy Bleeding And Cramps

How to Get Pregnant in 3 Months or Less

Bleeding between three to seven days can be considered normal. However, you should tell your doctor if your bleeding is very light or extremely heavy and intense. There are also other period-related signs that could indicate a fertility problem, including:

  • Significant changes in bleeding heaviness
  • Significant changes in the length of bleeding days
  • Unusual spotting between cycles

Menstrual cramps that are so intense that they interfere with your daily life can be a symptom of endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease . Both conditions can cause infertility.

Endometriosis and PID can get worse over time, so it’s important you do not delay in seeking treatment if you have symptoms of either condition.

Signs Of Male Infertility

While some people may think infertility is based on women, think again. “Male infertility affects 40 percent of infertile couples,” Dr. Ross says, “so make certain that your partner is paying extra attention to his own personal lifestyle habits. Both marijuana and Propecia have been known to affect sperm production and quality, so what your partner does socially can ultimately cause abnormal swimmers!”

Smoking cigarettes, too, can negatively impact sperm and semen quality. In April of 2016, European Urology published results of the effect of smoking on semen health. It included 20 studies and just over 5,000 men across Europe. The findings? That smoking was associated with decreased sperm count, decreased sperm mobility, and poor sperm morphology.

Diet Exercise And Conception

There is no special diet that improves the odds of conception, but a healthy range of foods that includes lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats is recommended.

Vitamins and minerals are essential for the body to function. Read more about the benefits of vitamins and minerals for fertility and pregnancy health, including folic acid, iodine, vitamin D, zinc and selenium supplements.

Regular exercise also improves fertility. Australian and international guidelines recommend you do at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity such as brisk walking, gardening or dancing on most but preferably all days of the week. If possible, do some vigorous activity such as running, fast cycling or fast swimming every week as well.

For men and women who are overweight or obese, exercise can help to prevent further weight gain or achieve a modest weight loss that improves general health and fertility. As part of weight management, international guidelines recommend that overweight or obese adults perform 225300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week .

What Happens At A Preconception Checkup

At your preconception checkup, your provider checks your overall health to make sure your body is ready for pregnancy. You and your provider can talk about:

Your provider may:

  • Give you a physical exam that includes taking your weight and checking your blood pressure.
  • Give you a pelvic exam. This is an exam of the pelvic organs, like the vagina, cervix, uterus and ovaries, to make sure theyre healthy. The cervix is the opening to your uterus that sits at the top of the vagina. If you have any problems in these organs, getting treatment before pregnancy may help prevent problems during pregnancy. Treatment also can help if you have fertility problems .
  • Do a Pap test. This is a medical test in which your provider collects cells from your cervix to check for cancer.
  • Test your blood to check your blood type and Rh factor. Rh factor is a protein found in red blood cells. If your Rh factor is negative, it can cause problems for your baby if her Rh factor is positive.
  • Recommend that you see a genetic counselor if certain health conditions run in your family. A genetic counselor has training to help you understand about genes, birth defects and other medical conditions that run in families, and how they can affect your health and your baby’s health.

Blood Tests To Check Ovulation

Levels of hormones in a womans blood are closely linked to ovulation, when the ovaries release an egg into the fallopian tubes. Hormone imbalances can cause ovulation problems, and a blood test can help determine whether this is happening.

Going through a phase of not having periods, or having irregular periods, are also signs of ovulation problems. The most common cause of ovulation problems is polycystic ovary syndrome.

Even if you’ve got the timing down and are getting it on with the right cadence, Dr. Ross points out that it could take, on average, six to nine months to conceive. “Depending on your age, you have a 15 to 25% chance of conceiving each month if you are having timed intercourse,” she explains. “If you are timing your intercourse over a three-month period, 50% of couples will conceive, and if you are timing your intercourse over six months, 75% of couples will conceive. And after 12 months of having timed intercourse, approximately 90% of couples will have conceived.”

If you’re 35 or older: Check in with your healthcare provider or a fertility specialist after the first six months of trying.

If you are younger than 35: If you’ve had timed intercourse for 12 months and still haven’t conceived, follow up with a healthcare provider or a fertility specialist.

How can i find out if i can get pregnant?

Infertility testing finding out whether or not a woman is able to become pregnant involves several medical exams, procedures, and tests. It is usually done for women who want to have a baby but are having trouble getting pregnant or for women who have health conditions that might cause infertility.

Infertility testing includes physical and ultrasound exams to evaluate the health of the reproductive organs. It includes chemical and hormonal tests to evaluate the health and number of the eggs in a womans ovaries. It is unlikely that a health care provider would screen a young woman for infertility unless she had trouble getting pregnant or a serious health problem.

In general, any young woman who ovulates and has her period should assume she can become pregnant. So, any girl who has unprotected vaginal intercourse runs the risk of becoming pregnant. Generally, a woman who has unprotected vaginal intercourse during the course of one year has an 85 percent chance of becoming pregnant.

Pregnancy can happen when semen gets in the vagina or on the vulva. Here are some examples of things that do NOT cause pregnancy: kissing, masturbation, body rubbing, oral sex, anal sex. These things wont cause pregnancy unless sperm comes into contact with the vagina or vulva.

There Are Several Different Types Of Fertility Tests

When a woman has questions about her fertility, the first test doctors usually start with is a blood test to determine her levels of anti-Mullerian hormone . This hormone is released by a womans eggs, and these levels go down as her egg count declines with age. An AMH test can provide a good idea of how many eggs a woman has left, and how she compares with other women the same age, says Jennifer Eaton, MD, a fertility specialist and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center.

Women can get their AMH levels tested in their doctors office or at a lab facility, or they can order an at-home kit from a company like Modern Fertility or Lets Get Checked. In either case, the results take a few days to be analyzed.

Blood tests for fertility can also measure levels of follicle-stimulating hormone . This number actually goes up as a womans egg count goes down, so it can be another indication as to whether her ovarian reserve, or the number of eggs she has left, is normal for her age.

For couples who have been trying to get pregnant and havent succeeded, doctors will likely recommend other tests, as well. These may include other blood and urine tests, along with a hysterosalpingographyan x-ray of the uterus and fallopian tubes to check for any abnormalities or blockages. Men might also be asked to provide a semen sample, to test the quantity and quality of their sperm.

How To Know When Youre Ovulating

Knowing when you ovulate can help you plan for sex at the right time and improve your chance of getting pregnant. You can keep track of your menstrual cycles on a chart, in a diary, or on a free period-tracker app on your smartphone.

To work out the length of your menstrual cycle, record the first day you start bleeding . This is day 1. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period begins.

  • Some people think the menstrual cycle and a period are the same thing.

A period is when you bleed .

A menstrual cycle starts on the day when a period starts and ends the day before the next period. A cycles length is considered normal if its between 21 and 35 days. They can vary between women and from one cycle to the next.

  • Working out your average menstrual cycle length

If your menstrual cycles are different lengths you can work out your average cycle length.

The number of days in a womans menstrual cycle can vary month to month. Periods are not always regular. It can be useful to work out an average cycle length, based on the length of three menstrual cycles, to estimate when youre most likely to be ovulating.

If you add the number of days in three cycles and divide the total number by three, it gives you your average cycle length.

    Example

Sarah tracked her last three menstrual cycles by counting the time from the first day of one period, to the day before the next period.

Cycle 1 was 28 days Cycle 2 was 32 days Cycle 3 was 27 days

    28 + 32 + 27 = 87

Calculate Using A Dating Ultrasound

A dating ultrasound, which measures the length of the fetus from crown to rump, is an accurate way to estimate your due date or how far along you are if completed within the first trimester . Most women have a pretty good idea of when their last period was, within a day or two, says Scurfield. If a woman has no idea, youll want to try to get her as early as you can. Once you get past 13 weeks, the variability of the growth is such that an ultrasound can be off by a week or so.

Smoking And Alcohol Use

While most people are aware of the risks of using tobacco and alcohol while pregnant, smoking and drinking while trying to get pregnant can also cause problems.

Smoking negatively affects sperm counts, sperm shape, and sperm movementall of which are important factors for conception. IVF treatment success has also been found to be poorer in couples with male smokers, even when IVF with ICSI is used.

Smoking has also been connected to erectile dysfunction. Quitting cigarettes might be able to reverse the effect.

In women, smoking can speed up the process of ovarian aging, bringing on earlier menopause. If you quit early enough, you might be able to reverse some of the damage.

Heavy alcohol use can also lead to fertility problems for men and women. While most studies have found that a few drinks a week don’t typically cause harm to fertility, excessive drinking has been linked to lower sperm counts, poor sperm movements, and irregular sperm shape.

One study found that with every additional drink consumed per week, the IVF success rate decreased.

Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol use may positively impact fertility and will have a positive impact on health, but research has shown that some of the damage to the body caused by smoking might be reversibleparticularly in men.
