What Is A Safe Period

Safe period refers to the days when a woman has reduced chances of getting pregnant. So, if you do not want a baby and do not want to use contraceptives either, this is the time you should have sex with your partner.

Biologically speaking, this is the time whenthe egg is not present to be fertilised. If you have intercourse when there is no egg, you cannot get pregnant because this is the unfertile period in a menstrual cycle.

For most women, ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before the next menstruatal cycle starts. It is not easy to know exactly when you would start your next menstrual cycle . However, if your periods are mostly regular, it is easy to calculate the days of ovulation. To do this, you need to use the date of the previous menstrual cycle as a starting point. It is important to note that an egg can be fertilised only four days before ovulation and three days after ovulation. In other words, this is not the safe period, and so, you should avoid intercourse during this period.

Heres How To Track Your Cycle To Determine The Safest Days To Have Sex

Planned Parenthood recommends using one or more of the following methods in order to figure out when you are ovulating: the Temperature Method, which monitors your temperature daily, the Cervical Mucus Method, which keeps track of your discharge, and the Calendar Method, which counts your periods on a calendar. Additionally, the Standard Days Method âtracks your menstrual cycle for several months, in order to figure out if your cycle is always between 26 and 32 days long,â but if your cycle is longer or shorter, the method is rendered ineffective.

If youâre planning on monitoring your cycle to discover the safest days to have sex in order to avoid pregnancy, consider using an app, such as Natural Cycles, which tracks your ovulation and fertility. According to Elina Berglund, the appâs chief technology officer and co-founder, roughly 85% of sexually active women who choose not to use any form of birth control will become pregnant within the year. âThis is why it is so important to, when it comes to birth control, increase choice, such that each woman finds something that suits her,â Berglund previously told Elite Daily. âThe risk is otherwise that she will not keep using it and then there is a high pregnancy risk.â

Using The Calendar Method To Calculate Safe Period

If your cycle is less than 27 days, the calendar method will not work well for you. They use the calendar method alongside the cervical mucus and temperature method to calculate safe period.

In the calendar method, track your period for six months, noting down the first day of each period and last day of each cycle. Calculate the number of days in each cycle for the six months and note them down.

Check your shortest cycle and subtract 18 from the number of days in that cycle. For example, if your shortest period is 26 days, subtract 18 from 26 and you will get 8.

Then count 8 days from the first day of your period . Lets say the first day of the period is on the 3rd day of the month. You will mark X on the 10th day of the month . This will be your first fertile day of the period. Avoid sex unless you want to get pregnant.

To get the last date of the fertile period, find your longest menstrual cycle, and subtract 11 from the number of days in that cycle. For instance, if the longest cycle is 30 days, subtracting 11 from 30 will give 19. Count 19 days from the day 1 of your period .

So if the day 1 of the period is on the 3rd day of the month, you will mark X on the 21st day of the month. This is the last day of the fertile period, and you can have sex from the next day.

The calendar method is suitable for calculating safe period if your cycle does not fluctuate much, and is longer than 27 days. However, it cannot predict with certainty when you are fertile.

    Cervical Mucus Or Ovulation Method:

The hormones which control the menstrual cycle also stimulate the cervix to produce mucus. It usually gets collected in your cervix and vagina. It changes its amount and consistency just before and during ovulation. You can learn to recognize its changes so as to predict fertile and unfertile days. This method is also called the Billings method.

Here Is How You Do It:

    Check Your Mucus Pattern:
    • While you menstruate, the flow covers the mucus.
    • After your menstruation, there will be no mucus production for a few days which are usually referred as dry days. These are considered to be safe days if your cycle is longer.
    • When the egg begins to ripen, you will produce more mucus, which you can see at the vaginal opening. It will be white, yellow or cloudy and you can feel it to be sticky.
    • You will have more mucus just before you ovulate, and it looks clear and slippery. If you hold it between your fingers, it stretches. This property is known as Spinnbarkeit, a German word for fibrosity and stretchiness. This indicates your peak fertility days.
    • You will have about four days with slippery mucus, and then there will be a sudden fall in the flow. You will have a few dry days before your next period.
